Sizes are diameters in millimetres. Durometer is the hardness rating — the lower the number, the softer the wheel.
Durometer
A durometer is the measure of the hardness of the wheel. Skateboard wheels are made of urethane; a plastic material with varying degrees of hardness to achieve different feelings and results. Different wheel hardnesses are preferred for different uses and terrains. The lower the durometer (d, b or a), the softer the wheels; the higher the number, the harder the wheel.
Most often found in cruiser wheels, generally on large sized wheels (58mm+). 78a wheels are fantastic cruiser wheels, super soft and absorbent for easy cruising and rolling over rougher terrain. Very grippy for added stability and increased speed.
The latest addition from Powell-Peralta. 88a wheels are softer, cruiser and park focussed wheels. Highly impact absorbent and comfortable to ride on any terrain. Quite grippy for added stability.
Pioneered by Powell-Peralta and perfected by Spitfire, the range of 93d wheels has widened significantly. Manufactured with new formulas that allow slide and grip, absorbency and responsiveness, without sacrificing either one. Truly unique and extremely versatile.
Sitting right in between 93d and 99d, the 97d allows for a high level of cushion, without sacrificing slide quality. Super comfortable and fast, and just hard enough to achieve that response you need.
The most popular durometer of wheels in skateboarding. Highly responsive. Made for speed and control on all surfaces. Not too hard and not too soft.
Slick and hard. Extremely responsive and slides for days. Most often found at smooth skateparks, as the hardness can be overwhelming on gritty terrain.
Detailed Sizing Chart
The size of a wheel is measured by the diameter in millimetres. Generally, most skateboarding wheels range from 50mm to 60mm, with smaller wheels going down to around 48mm, and larger, cruiser specific wheels going up to 75mm.
Wheel diameter also affects how quickly you accelerate and how tightly you can turn. Smaller wheels result in a slower ride, whereas larger wheels result in a faster one. Because they are lower to the ground and typically easier to control, smaller wheels are ideal for technical or street skating. If you're a beginner or someone who uses a skateboard as daily transportation, you'll want to look into larger wheels instead. Their increased diameters offer speed and balance all in one, making them perfect for cruising and ramp skating with high speed retention.
- Good for
- Technical street skating, flip tricks, and skating at a slower, more controlled pace. A popular choice for lightweight riders and those who prioritise precision over speed.
- Not good for
- Cruising, rough surfaces, or high-speed riding. These wheels struggle on uneven pavement and can make for a harsh, bumpy ride.
- Good for
- Street skating and skate parks, offering a slight boost in speed over 50mm while still keeping things nimble and responsive.
- Not good for
- Long-distance riding or cruising. Still too small to roll smoothly over cracks and debris with ease.
- Good for
- An all-around street and park setup. A very common size among intermediate skaters who want a balance between speed and control.
- Not good for
- Vert ramps or fast-paced downhill riding, where extra size and momentum become more important.
- Good for
- Transitioning between street and park skating. Offers a bit more roll speed and momentum than smaller sizes, making it a versatile mid-range option.
- Not good for
- Heavy technical tricks where a lighter, smaller wheel would feel more responsive.
- Good for
- Skate parks, mini ramps, and bowl skating. At this size, wheels begin to offer noticeably more speed and stability, suiting skaters who spend time on varied terrain.
- Not good for
- Super technical street skating, as the added size can make flip tricks feel slightly less snappy.
- Good for
- Pools, bowls, and vert skating. A solid choice for skaters who ride transitions regularly and want reliable speed and grip through curves.
- Not good for
- Tight technical street lines or tricks where a lightweight, smaller setup is preferred.
- Good for
- Vert skating, cruising around the neighbourhood, and rougher surfaces. Wheels at this size roll over cracks and uneven ground much more smoothly.

- Street-focused trick skating, where the extra size and weight can interfere with board feel and flip speed.
- Good for
- Cruising and skating on rougher terrain. Provides a noticeably smoother and faster ride on imperfect surfaces.

- Technical skating where manoeuvrability and board responsiveness take priority.
- Good for
- Daily transportation, cruising longer distances, and downhill riding. At this size, wheels are built more for comfort and speed than technical ability.

- Flip tricks, or any style of skating that requires a highly responsive and lightweight setup.
- Good for
- Cruising, commuting, and carving. Handles rough pavement well and maintains speed with minimal effort.
- Not good for
- Skateparks or street skating. The size makes the board feel heavy and slow to respond during tricks.
- Good for
- Cruising, transportation, rough roads, and downhill skating. At the top of this range, these wheels prioritise speed, smoothness, and stability above all else.
- Not good for
- Virtually any form of technical skating. These are purpose-built for smooth, fast riding rather than tricks or agility.
