New Balance Rebuilt a '90s Cross-Trainer for Skateboarding

When the cross-trainer boom of the 1980s and 90s settled in, New Balance found themselves somewhere near the top, with the technically-minded CXT770 proving a breakthrough style for elite tennis players in particular.

Long since packed away in a Boston cupboard, New Balance Numeric recently dug the CXT770 out and made some seriously impressive internal adjustments to deliver the NM770 – the skatable version of the classic cross-trainer – and we've got our hands on it this week.

The NM770 has got everything you'd expect in a Numeric shoe – FuelCell foam tech, a double-layered toe cap, and those PU performance insoles. But on top of that, the NM770 retains an updated iteration of the original Counter Reinforcer Footframe System, a piece of comfort-first tech that wraps the heel and separates the midsole into two distinct parts.

What you're left with is a shoe that looks and feels like the OG '90s trainer (did we mention how lightweight these things are?), while packing the needed punch under the hood to hold up as a top-tier, tech-heavy skate shoe. At this point, we know New Balance is always going to deliver something pretty fantastic to skate in, and we're pretty excited to give these ones a go.

The NM770 is available now at Boardworld in two debut, limited-release colourways.
