They are being shipped from Hong Kong.

Mizu Kuma - 14 December 2012 04:04 AM

. . . and still has 12 month warranty too . . .

Being shipped from Hong Kong most likely makes it “grey market” - so although Kogan states they have a 12 month warranty, it’s probably not a genuine manufacturers warranty (ie. not the standard warranty you’d get if purchasing from an approved retailer in Australia).

It wouldn’t surprise me if they weren’t actual GoPro cameras. GoPro “employ” a Chinese company to build their product. The camera itself (not the housing) was originally a generic product added to GoPro branded accessories. So generic that there was no issue putting GoPro branding on it.
The manufacturer started building it to meet GoPro specifications - the first was improving video quality for the first Hero.
I say not actually a GoPro camera in that it hasn’t moved through GoPro approved lines.

If the manufacturer tell GoPro there is a delay how does anyone know the “delay” isn’t stockpiling Chinese sellers!

With GoPro making $3.5million profit since the Hero release (before Hero3 was announced) it would be easy(ish) to not keep track of all the cameras that move through proper GoPro lines.

Kogan warranty claim costs coupled with hero3 issues make it a gamble to save $100.

That would open Kogan up to a lot of legal issues which they would be in a very difficult situation to defend. If they sold it as ‘Similar to Go-Pro’ or ‘From the same factory as Go-Pro’ then they could get away with it. But marketing it as ‘GoPro 3 Black’ and doing a bait and switch with the item would mean everyone who bought one, gets their money back and potentially more. Especially in a class action, with a large amount of legal fees associated with it.

Not worth it at all.

ooook..

so here my my really fast time lapse test.. (straight out of the camera../ no editing, except making the images into a short movie..)

not the greatest quality.. didnt shoot it at the best res (thats my fault.. but i will redo it when i get a chance - hopefully on a day where you actually see the sun?!?! haha)

* this was more of a “oh! hey! its 5:30am.. im still awake (just) lets run down the beach and test this camera!!..” *sets up while running from the car to the beach/pool*)

It’s China, they do this often and company’s disappear without resolve.
BUT,
My foul mood that day exposed the cynic in me - They are probably legit, the price leaves room for profit based on US pricing but not on wholesale costs here.
Kogan seem to have a poor reputation when it comes to warranty. Would do better to order from GoPro or shop around for the best local bargin - there are good prices in Australia if you spend the time to put put down the keyboard and pick up the phone.

Was this an app update or a firmware update on the camera?

First we got a firmware update that enabled the gp3b to use the apps, then we got the app, then overnight an update to the app to bring it up to where it should be.

I’m waiting for my Class 10 memory card to here (ETA tomorrow), but so far I’m really liking what GoPro has done with this cam.  The only real downer is the horrible battery life.  It seems the best you can expect is around 100 minutes on a standard battery.  Turning all the good stuff on (wifi, higher frame rates, protune) drains it even faster.  I’ll definitely be packing at least 1 spare battery with this cam.

I saw on another forum that they are HK stock, so you’d be a bit exposed on warranty.

I’m sure that the warranty wont be too much drama, due to Kogan operating as an Australian Company they have to abide by our consumer laws!!!!!

Surely the battery life will improve somewhat also, Mud????? New Lith batteries do take a few charges before they start to hold their peak charge for some reason????? (That’s what I’ve experienced anyway, and also you have to take into account the abnormal “play time” that a new toy gets in the discovery stage?????)

Miz, I think the concern is that since the unit is effectively a grey-market import, the warranty would be provided by Kogan and not GoPro.

On battery life, I believe it maxes after about 3 full charge/discharge cycles, and that max is about 100 mins, give or take depending on settings.  There was some good info in a post on the GoPro freeforums, I’ll see if I can dig it out.

Warranty is still Warranty though????? As long as they honour it, I don’t see the difference????? Unless I’ve missed somethin?????

Is that 100 minutes operating time, or standby????? Cause 100 minutes of footage is a lot of footage!!!!! I think that was about the same amount of footage that I had to edit for the first Boardworld Shredit, and that took me a friggin lifetime to go through!!!!!

Would you prefer a GoPro or Kogan warranty?  I’d also rather support local retail where possible (got mine from a small shop nearby), and not have to worry about mailing it back for a warranty claim.

There’s more detail on the battery stuff in the post above yours.  I’m sure it’s fine, I’ll just make sure I’m packing extras!

edit: I should note that the wifi drains the bejesus out of the battery.  Even leaving the wifi on the cam on while the rest of the cam is off (why would you do that?  well if you want to be able to turn the cam on via wifi, then wifi has to be on on the cam!), my battery goes dead overnight.  I guess you’d only want to be turning wifi on via the cam’s manual controls when you need it, then off when finished.
