Great report Finney, keep them coming!
Here’s a little edit of my buddy and fellow coach Duncan smashing some black park laps a few weeks ago. It’s a promo video for the camp so please excuse the shameless plug but i figured you guys would appreciate the riding!
You only need to include the video id not the full youtube url or it won’t work. I’ve reposted it here for you.
Thx drc13
Nice video, Luke!
Can you tell us more about the summer camp?
Pretty good day today. Was planning to ride Whistler but wasn’t sure if peak’s gonna open so headed up Blackcomb. Got a text from finney saying peak’s going to open but I was already at 7th Heaven so might as well stay bcomb. First run down couloir extreme with some fresh snow, except the very top part where it’s always a bit chewed up. I was probably 10-15th down there so pretty stoked I finally got some fresh turns on couloir. Did couloir 1 more time, then decided to head to spankys to the top of ruby bowl far left. Snow up top was alrite, got there a bit late so a little tracked out but still some fresh snow, the bottom part of ruby was not so good, still soft snow but no more freshies. Next was Blackcomb glacier, didn’t get untouched pow but there are still some fresh snow at some spots. Decided to try 7th and traverse to lakeside bowl, found some good snow but most of it is tracked by the time I got there which is around 1:30ish.

Nice!!!!!
You been ridin ya TRice at all since ya got ya new PYL?????
Not yet. Planning to ride it this sat at Cypress if I decided to go. I kinda miss it. Riding the PYL is tiring since it’s mostly cambered and stiff.
Nice one, Skip!
So i’ve just had the absolute best two days of season! I have just passed my CASI level 2 exam followed by back country hiking & a booterville sesh today in which i attempted my first backflip. I might write up a big whistler entry including pictures and videos. Stay tuned!!
So i spent the last week doing my level 2 CASI snowboard instructing exam. Pretty stressful 4 days focusing on every little aspect of my riding and then followed by every aspect of my teaching ability constantly being evaluated. But….. I PASSED!
So needless to say i went out & got absolutely wrecked in celebration
I woke up the next morning with my roommates telling me it was a good day to go backcountry hiking, so regardless of how hungover i felt i put on my gear and headed out the door! We headed up blackcomb glacier hiking towards Husume. Took us about 30 minutes or so because there was a solid bootpack already set in place.
This is what the hike looked like.
When we finally got to the top it was a pretty amazing view so we took a bunch of photos.
We then had a slight traverse down the backside of the glacier (where the avalanche had occured four days prior) in order to get to Husume!
View from Husume.
At this stage we decided that Husume wasn’t enough. And just off to the left was an extra 50m hike in which had no tracks down a fresh powder face. So we hiked up to what seemed like the top of the world!
Roommate george taking a piss.
Me standing on top of the world.
Fresh power line facing the side wall of Husume.
So although this very line turned out to be the best line of my snowboarding life, looking back it was also extremely dangerous. None of us had any backcountry gear (transmitter, probe, shovel etc) and during the hike a few people voiced their concerns considering the avalanche risk. Stoked none the less we headed back up blackcomb glacier ready for a second hike.
Random photos on our way back up
We hiked up blackcomb glacier towards Dead Or Alive and decided to have lunch up there.
Having lunch up the top was an awesome experience, all we needed was a few beers & we would have been set! A short hike around the corner lead us to the entrance of DOA.
Dropping in!
Looking back up
Looking down from half way.
After that we decided we had hiked enough and one final run down through booterville would top the day off!
Pre made booter we found.
After this we called it day, pretty stoked with the day. The next morning I went down to work to find out there was virtually no work and about 7 of us had the day to go shredding! Considering a bluebird day it was quickly decided that a booterville day sesh was in order! Grabbed a case of beer & some sandwiches and we headed up blackcomb gondy. During this gondola we found a random Aussie who had just arrived in Whistler that day and decided after hearing about booterville he wished to join us.
We headed towards booterville and began building our kicker into fresh powder! The random guy who joined us hadn’t snowboarded as much as the rest of the group but upon his first hit of the jump landed a backflip (he had landed them on a wakeboard before). So with this new added pressure of some random showing us up, it was decided that everyone must attempt a backflip. This is how it went!
My first attempt.

My second attempt
Probably one of the scariest feelings dropping in to throw a backflip for the first time considering i had only just learnt how to backflip on a trampoline a month ago at Bounce. But with everyone egging me on I had no choice! After the first one was out of the way it wasn’t as bad so I kept at it. A few attempts saw me over rotating and landing on my back, on my final attempt I somehow manage to throw a 180 in there & still land flat on my back. My mate filmed it on a go-pro so here it is!
Regardless of not riding away from my backflip attempts I’m still super stoked with the past two days in which have definitely been the highlight of the season.
Hoping there are still more pow days to come as the end of the season nearing is quite depressing!
Firstly, big congratulations on passing your level 2. Great work!
Awesome update, mate. I’m really stoked you’re having a great season over there, and it sounds like you’re progressing very nicely as well. Thanks for the update and photos.
nice write up. some of those backcountry runs look so fun! makes me want to ride!
On those flips Kinda of looks like you are worried about not rotating enough so throwing yourself too hard and then rotating way too much? It wasnt a small jump and you had heaps of speed so you were always going to rotate enough by the looks of it. Maybe try slowing the flip and grabing indy? oh and film it again so I can watch again haha
Awesome update bb!!!!!
Grats on the Level 2!!!!!
I’m with CRACKERS on the want to ride some of that BC!!!!! Looks like soooo much fun, and with an incredible back drop to go with it!!!!!

Yeah all the other guys were trying to tell me where i was going wrong & how to fix it. But to be honest as soon as i threw myself off the jump my mind was going blank until i hit the snow haha. I’m just happy i ballsed up enough to try it!
Epic write up and awesome pics bb
