Whistler 2012 / 2013 - The Community Blog

Hey y’all! Thought it must be about time I chimed in!

I’ve been in Whistler since Feb this year, the winter was incredible and the summer absolutely blew me away! I love it here and don’t want to think about leaving any time soon. I’m super keen to meet everyone once they arrive and get shreddy!

Unfortunately I found myself house-hunting at the worst possible time (now!) and am still looking to lock in a place from Dec 1. If anyone knows of anything, please give me a shout. I’m hoping for a private room as I do a bit of work from home, but seriously, would be happy to check anything out at this stage.

Looking forward to a wicked season!!

Thanks for the info!
I’ve found another job and started now so hopefully the next few Weeks will go nice and fast! Let’s pray for snow!
Be cool to meet up with people once you all get here smile

Sam

If you haven’t already joined jump on this group on facebook as I’ve noticed a few people in the past trying to get groups of people together for a house - http://www.facebook.com/groups/510481582301427/

I’ll echo your thoughts on summer, it was my first one there and it was amazing, we definitely got lucky with the weather compared to the previous summer where there was little to no sun.

Still waiting on my visa renewal to come through aswell which is starting to get a bit stressful since it’s taking a while compared to my last renewal.

Hey everyone,

Long time reader, first time poster.

I’ve been boarding for the last 5 years (couple of weeks per year) and finally managed to get a decent stint (6 weeks) in whistler early this year. Bitten by the bug and have committed to most the season this time round.

Flying out Christmas eve and back mid May.

Last season I did 6 weeks with Pro-Ride to maximise the time spent there. Had a great time, met my girlfriend there lol happy days!

Going to do a 2 month camp there (jan/feb) and then kick it for the last couple of months.

Would be good to catch up with some fellow aussies (plenty over there) and just have a great time!

Cheers,
Felix

Hi all :-D

Figured it was about time I posted something after reading through a bunch of threads in recent months.

I’m flying into Vancouver on the 18th of November, then heading up to Whistler on the 20th after I sort out my SIN and do some shopping in Van. Happy to get gear, phone and bank account in Whistler, since it seems it is doable.

Staying at HI-Whistler for 14 days. In the mean time, a few friends are coming 2 days after me so we’ll be looking for a place to stay and work at the same time.
The house is the most important bit. There’s 4 to 5 of us at this stage for the entire season, so does looking for a whole house make it any easier? My instinct says no because late November is completely different to Sep/Oct, correct? Ah well, we’ll live raspberry

I’m looking to land a job in hospitality once I get there. Bartending preferably 3-4 days a week. Something to cover some costs. I’ve got plenty saved up so it’s not life and death, but it would be nice also to meet a bunch of people. I have 4 years previous bar experience when I was at uni (including supervisor) and I’ve been a pharmaceutical rep for the past 4 years so should at least make me semi-employable haha.

My last day of work is this Tuesday, then it’s just a bit of shopping, some sun at the beach, time with family then WOOOO WHISTLER! :-D
Looking forward to meeting a bunch of you when I get up there.

Welcome to Boardworld guys, looking forward to shredding with everyone through the season. Looks like it’s going to be a big crew of people this year shaka

Whistler Blackcomb just posted this up on their facebook, looking like a great start to the season which is set to kick off on the 22nd of November. Given the amount of snow already up there I’d say there could be a slight chance of an early opening especially if they get some good snowfalls over the next 2 weeks grin

Just been doing some reading on the net Finney across various sites. I’ve heard the 16th far too many times for it to be a coincidence. So, we’ll see what happens wink

Yeah I’m just going by what Whistler Blackcomb is saying.. But as you’ve said, if you look at opening day historically it’s generally a week before the initial date they have announced. Just have to wait and see.

Obviously if I hear anything off my mates over there already I’ll be posting it up in here to keep you all in the loop as there is a good chance they’ll know before any official announcement is made to the public wink

Also if anyone is after a room for November whilst you’re getting settled shoot me a PM on here for details as I’ve got a room for rent in Nordic. Could also look to extend through until mid december aswell if you’re interested. It’s a 5 min walk from the bus and around 10min walk to the slopes in Creekside.

Fledz, I’ll be doing something similar to you, staying at the hostel and finding a place to live. I arrive on the 25th of November grin

Pulled out all of my gear from storage yesterday, gonna give the board/s a wax and tune, get all my ducks in a row etc etc. Acutally, not sure if I will bother bringing a second board, its slightly longer to what I currently ride, for powder days maybe?? Can’t wait to drop in to that first run….and the many others that will follow!

Nice one, so you’re staying at HI too? Cool, we’ll do a few runs when you get here then.

I just spent all day researching snowboards and I think I’ve narrowed it down to specifics. No idea which brand to start on, though the Burton Custom or Custom X looked like something close. Do we have a specific thread for suggestions on new gear in the other sub forum or is it best to just start a new thread?

Feedback on board choices? Start a thread in the equipment section at https://www.boardworld.com.au/forums/viewforum/6/ with the boards you’re looking at and your stats like weight, boot size, riding style etc. the more info the better.
