Curved helmet mount.. Peeling but still sticky enough?!

Avatar

Question for anyone who’s used a helmet mounting system for gopro or drift!

So I have a drift cam and I’ve installed the curved mount onto my helmet and it sticks well, but on either side, gaps of up between the helmet and mount adhesive after around 20 mins… Pushing it down hard makes both sides stick again, but if left untouched, they peel back once more to expose the gaps..

It is still fairly stuck on and isn’t coming off even with a bit of force, but should I be worried about the big gaps that open up? Can invading water or cold reduce the 3M adhesives ability to stick? I’m a little nervous trusting hundreds of dollars worth of kit to a little piece of adhesive gulp

Cheers,

Hey mate, we use gopros on our whitewater helmets. So they are under a lot of stress when going through rapids with big waves and holes where you go under water or through whitewash. We have had on the occasion the gopro come off, but to avoid losing it at the bottom of a crazy river or waterfall, we have a thin cord tied around the base of the camera and down to the strap on the helmet near the ear. Doesnt get in the way, and if it comes off, its still attached to us somehow.

I dont know what the drift mounts are like, but it if is 3M it should be alright. Only way it is coming off is if you take a big direct hit to it. I suggest just using a bit of cord to stop from losing your camera in the case it does come off

when you first put the sticky on make sure to clean the helmet surface with isopropanol and heat it up a little with a hair dryer. this will ensure maximum adhesion.

Cool thanks guys.

Have fashioned a little lanyard thingo for the mount smile

It sounds like some dirt got on the sticky surface.
You need to get all wax and dirt off before applying.

I have some 3M tape if you can’t fix it.

Thanks spaz.

The helmet was really clean, it’s just that the curve of the helmet is slightly more than the curved drift mount. I think I need some thicker more spongier 3M tape.

or drill some holes small enough for cable-ties and use them to hold it on.

Spaz have you used 3M dual lock before for mounting anything? If so, do you reckon you get much rattle/vibration compared to mounting with fixed adhesive tapes?

Dual lock is pretty amazing, the velcro is far stronger than the glue.
The fixed adhesive tapes that have a thick rubber do reduce vibration.

i took a decent stack a few trips ago where i cleared the down ramp of a jump in the blue cow park coming unstuck and smashing my head on the ground…the drift went flying off my helmet mount and all…drc thankfully brought some 3M tape which i cut to size to remount the camera on to my helmet…mounting it this second time around it looks to have stuck better and stronger onto my helmet…also tested it out last weekend when i came unstuck on a patch of ice, eating it with my helmet but the cam stayed on un-damaged and un-moved…maybe try pulling the current tape off it and replacing it…the stuff i used from drc seems a little thicker and looks as though it stuck better overall

Yep the real key is to use the VHB range from 3M you can get it in a variety of thickness/sizes

It’s surprisingly easy to track down. You can either get industrial lengths from distibutors/ebay or the really simple option is to pop into officeworks. They have a VHB red double sided tape I think it’s called outdoor mounting tape. You’ll need to cut it to fit the mounting pad but it will certainly do the job.

Edit: Something like this http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Office-Supplies/Stationery/Adhesives/Sticky-Tape/Heavy-Duty-Tape/3M0417152

I had the same problem with the curved mount on my Gath surfing helmet. The curve of the GoPro curved mount didn’t match the curve of my helmet. I ended up using some Solarez (surfboard repair resin) around the edge to fill in the gaps. It worked like a charm and it’s on there super solid now.

At least it gave me peace of mind that the GoPro wouldn’t come off in the surf.
