I’ve worn hire helmets and borrowed other people’s helmets, borrowed boots (which in the gross stakes has to be higher!)...Its not really that big a deal. Always seems to be a lot of thin justification for spending money around here. I’m not saying don’t buy one, either…but buying one because rental ones are supposedly icky is weird.

I just think that spending $20 for 2-3 days of hire is stupidly justified as it being cheaper when he plans to ride in the future. Just a couple of weekend trips with hiring will make the investment worth it and I find it quite silly that people ride without helmets.

Rental gear is fine if you are going for a first time. If you are on a snowboard forum and going all the time, it seems stupid to continue to rent when you can get better stuff which will cost you less in the long run.

Rental = short term saving money
Buying = long term saving money

I.E. my snowboard was $500. I’ve used it for 50+ days on the mountain. That’s $10 a day. A rental board from Rhythm is $20-$45 a day for their cheapest / worst quality board. So if you do 1 weekend every few years, then sure, go rent. If you are committed, you should have your own gear.

P.S. I have no problems borrowing friends gear, but a rental helmet often can = dandruff and possibly lice if you’re not careful. That risk for a $60 saving doesn’t seem worth it to me.

depends how short of cash you are…I’m not advocating that buying one is a waste of money, or not to buy one….I’m just trying to tell him, that if he’s short of cash, not to feel bad or like he’s somehow gross or likely to catch something if he hires a helmet for a few days.

If I had $150 in my bank and was in his position, I’d go for the renting and buy one another time when I had more cash flow.

Not sure how you could get dandruff from a helmet if you didn’t already have it and the possibility of lice is pretty much infinitesemal.

I just fear that renting can easily be “I’ll save $20 and wear a beanie”

Blizz I reckon you should only give him the free tickets IF he buys the helmet!

It only what any responsible sister should do!

How much is a decent helmet?

There is no point quoting you prices!

Just go to Rhythm and find one that fits/looks best and works with your goggles!

I don’t think that is fair…if he rents one for $20, he is still being responsible.
