Japan for Christmas/New Years

I know the topic of Hakuba v Niseko has probably been discussed to death on these walls, but my question is directed at which is the better option with regard to the start of the season (as I have been caught out in Sweden before)? Looking at going in the christmas/new years area and just wanting to make sure I don’t spend a week in a cold hotel when I could be boarding. Thanks for the tips!

I don’t think there is anywhere that you would be guaranted snow at Christmas.

It is so hit and miss.

Logic states that Niseko would be better as it higher in latitude than Hukuba.

Welcome to Boardworld, dwish. cool smile

I’d hit up somewhere in Hokkaido for the reason ozgirl mentioned. More reliable snow up north but my guess it will be pretty decent by Christmas at most resorts anyway.

Nthn and i were caught out majorly in Tahoe…

I hear ya Deano but I have no choice!

Half my holidays must be taken at that time so its either risk it or not get my northern hem snow fix!

After a week of bluebird at Hakuba in mid January I’m crossing everything for some true POW this upcoming trip (allowing at least 2 weeks on snow this time probably Myoko/Nozawa)

Snow is unpredictable you could research previous years snowfalls by date but that still is only a rough guide. From memory Hokkaido got off to strong early start last year while Honshu was slow off the marks but had fairly strong falls just before and after I arrived/left.

Either way I still had an amazing time making the most of the long groomed runs.

Thanks for the tips all, I think we will probably go north, it is a shame as my holiday season is dictated a little by the xmas/new years shut down too. What would be wrong with a late january shut down I ask?
