There are two different types of bases - extruded and sintered.
Extruded bases are cheaper and easier to maintain. However they don’t absorb wax efficiently and they don’t perform as well as a sintered base. For this reason, waxing an extruded base isn’t entirely necessary and a rub on wax will be sufficient.
A sintered base is porous and physically absorbs wax into the pores of the base material. Sintered bases are faster, maintain momentum a lot better, and are more resistant to damage.
It should read like this:
Extruded bases are cheaper and shittier. However they don’t absorb wax efficiently and they don’t perform as well as a sintered base. For this reason, waxing an extruded base isn’t entirely necessary and a rub on wax will be sufficient.
The ‘easier to maintain’ bit is just marketing BS.
It’s a shame the YES boards are going in this direction…
Thanks guys.
So Burton Custom wide? Any other wide board options?
Custom Wide would be a good option for sure. It’s also available in the Flying V camber profile (hybrid). Available in 158W and 162W.
Info on the different camber profiles here: https://www.boardworld.com.au/forums/viewthread/4119/
AJ, I don’t think YES are necessarily “moving in that direction” so to speak. I believe it’s just the YES Basic with an extruded base. Considering it’s their budget snowboard, it’s understandable. They want to have a budget, more entry level option available. The price also came down $50 which is good. RRP is $649 this year. I would have liked them to keep the sintered base on the Basic, but they still have a bunch of higher end boards to meet that need.
I was having a look at the Burton website the other day and it seems a few of their boards come in a wide option so I’ll look more into that.
Thanks again for all the info and help.
If anyone else has any other suggestions I’d love to hear them.
