Will a single wash reduce waterproof-ness?

Avatar

I have some omnitech pants that could use a wash… and I’ve never washed outerwear before…

Would a single machine wash without waterproofing detergent generally impact on waterproof-ness if care instructions are followed properly?

Cheers,

Nothing holds its waterproofing forever, but if you keep to the care instructions you’ll be okay. Usually a cold wash with no detergent at all (unless it’s purpose made for outerwear) should be fine as far as I know.

You can buy some wash products for outwear but a cold water wash will be fine.

Lux flakes are best for washing outerwear. Gentle but still help remove dirt.

I have never re waterproofed my gear and I wash it a couple of times a season.

It should be fine. Wash it on a gentle cycle. If you don’t have Nikwax, use a small amount of a liquid detergent, preferably a gentle detergent as ozgirl mention or a detergent for wollens etc. Follow the care instructions, which I’m guessing says to tumble dry on a low setting? - this actually reactivates the DWR (water repellency coating) and breathability for most outerwear (I know this is this case for Gore-tex and other materials).
