Spending a decent amount of time in Japan, and my current hiking boots won’t handle Japanese winter (they’re super breathable and not waterproof). So I am looking at getting some other boots for when I walk around town at night.
What, if anything, do you guys get? .
http://columbia.com.au/products/footwear/productDetails.cfm?parentID=177&catID=191&prdID=38753 is currently high on my list to buy.
I’ve never bought any special shoes for the snow. Just always worn my DC skate shoes when out and about.
Look nice. I have a pair of Sorel boots they are great but kinda weird looking. I think your just better off wearing skate shoes even if you have two pairs incase they get damp one night when you fall over pissed.
DVS have a whole series of snowboots.
DC have a range also
Skater shoes not so much my style. Plus having previously rolled my ankle on ice and spraining my wrist in the fall, I’d prefer to have the ankle support haha.
I’ll have a look at DVS/DC boots, but I wouldn’t buy a snowboard from a hiking store, I don’t think I would buy hiking gear from a skate shop if you get what I mean.
Yeah, I just wear my runners which have been fine for aussie and NZ snow conditions .... not sure if they’d be ok for japan but I’m not going to be buying anything special for my trip up there.

If I was there for a few weeks I’d agree. But I’m there for at least 2 months, possibly more depending on a few things. Walking around in cold/wet shoes gets old pretty quickly and it can get pretty freaking cold overnight there.
On my second pair of DC Rovers now!!!!! (Wore the last pair out)
And when I go back to Niseko, I will be wearin these again with them!!!!! Waterproof and Grip, LIKE A BOSS!!!!!
DC boots look awesome, may have to get a pair myself…....
Beats the weirdo looking hiking boots I have now!
Stupid iPhone and it’s double posting…..
I have some Aldi apres boots from last year, but this year I didn’t wear them at all because my Redback boots were awesome. Big thick soles with lots of tread, didn’t get cold or wet at all. And Aussie made FTW!
Get some 80’s style ‘Moon Boots’
I wear my “Sorel” style boots (different brand). Rarely done up for getting around town but find they get too warm if spending time indoors.
I always just wear my DC skate shoes. If it is particularly Icy I put grips on the bottom of them
I have a pair of Timberlands and a pair of North Face boots.
Both do the job.
I got myself a pair of these last season, so far super happy with them and havent been on my ass once. Taking them to japow in a few weeks as my only shoes besides my boarding boots
