new board, to wax or not

Avatar

ahoy boardworldians,
i was having an excited that the season is starting in a few days chat with a mate and i told him how i have a new board and during the animated banter he asked if i was going to wax it. Now i didnt plan on it as i thought it would come from the factory already waxed but it got me wondering if maybe i should give it another waxing to make sure it has been done properly, or should i just ride it and see how it fares. I dont mind waxing it but id like to hear other peoples opinions/experiences with new boards and their slide-ability out of the plastic.

Factory waxes are typically very light and fast, I usually wax my board before I first ride it - for no reason other than I know I won’t be doing it anytime soon in future. The only thing you’ll notice is that it might dry out a littler faster than after waxing it yourself - it will probably need waxing after 1-2 days riding depending on your snow conditions.

I think I waxed both my boards before I first used them. It can’t hurt but I don’t think it’s really necessary as it comes with a factory wax. I find I have to wax my board pretty often in Oz anyway as it’s real coarse snow, I think especially the man made stuff. I usually will wax it after a 3 day trip. So maybe just do it after your first weekend or something.

NO

I don’t wax new boards. The factory wax is usually the best wax your board will have and lasts fairly long. But as soon as the base starts to dry out wax it.

If I did it would be a heavy wax to protect a new board.

Yeah I am with Spaz on this!

I always ride a few days before waxing… generally only 2 or 3 as the factory wax dies pretty quick. Though it does the job for at least a few days.

I agree with Sam, wax it, the factory stuff does not last like a hand job at home !!!!!

It may depend on snow conditions. Right now I wouldn’t wax. If the snow was light and fresh I might consider it (nothing like waxing the night before).

2 or 3 days will take most wax jobs off.

The factory waxing is usually not a hot wax, it’s just a quick machine wax to make the base look slick and new - I’ve seen plenty of boards with dried out bases before they even hit the snow because the factory wax wasn’t good enough to last it since being sent out. A hot wax that someone has spent time doing will penetrate deeper.

Before I got a rockered board I didn’t wax my boards for up to a month - they just didn’t dry out much as much as rockers. I really only started waxing when I had free access to wax, and even now I still do it sparingly and only when I feel like I need to, like when powder starts sticking to my edges.

gulp

I agree with Sam too. My first board constantly had dry edges on the base and would not absorb wax very well, all because I left the first waxing too late.

The factory wax seems to be super fast, either that or it’s a new board psychological thing, I have had with and without.  When I didn’t I needed to wax it after the first two days.

i never wax a new board, leave it for about 2-3 days then give it a go.

I have never bothered to wax it straight away, like others have said give it a couple of days and then give it a hot wax. I don’t think you can go too far wrong either way!

I usually wax my new boards. You never know how long ago the board was waxed. Sits in the factory, gets shipped around the world, sits on a shelf etc. It gives the wax plenty of time to dry out (but you can usually tell if it’s the case).

The real reason I wax a new board is so it will perform its absolute best on the first day. Fresh coat of fluoro wax. Nothing like getting on a new board and having it super fast, with heaps of pop - it’s just nice. Admittedly, I tend to get lazy with regular waxing after that. I’ll wax it before a powder day though.

spaz, what makes you think the factory wax is the best it will have? I believe most factories would just give a quick belt wax for time efficiency? Maybe I’m wrong.

I’m going to move this thread to Equipment and Products later today. smile
