Can someone reccomend a good Shell jacket?

Avatar

Hey Guys,
I have a Sessions insulated jacket, it gets way to warm for me.

I want to get a good shell and then just wear thermals or on a really cold day wear a hoody underneath it, in doing so would i need to go a size larger? I am an XL but wit a hoody on might need to go up to XXL, what do you guys reckon? I have a XL northface rain jacket and there is no way i could wear a hoodie under it.

I have looked at a few of these online, The 2L stagger from burton looks sweet but but my problem is i live on Christmas island and cant get into any stores and check them out. I have rang alot of stores and no one has it in my size.

Can you guys recommend your favorite jackets.

Cheers

Hey dude,

If you are going from an insulated to a shell, the shell will be a bit larger to compensate for the layers.

I personally really like Volcom jackets. Always top quality and good designs.

My current jacket is a Bonfire Radiant which runs 10k / 10k and was more than sufficient on days when it was snowing in Japan. I wore a t-shirt under it… I also got it on sale for $150 from One Track Mind in Crowsnest. BARGAIN!

Hey Jared,

I absolutely love the AK Stagger jacket. I’ve owned two and been through quite a few seasons with them. The cut is great, I love the neck/hood, the pockets are excellent (size, positioning, waterproof zips), and it’s GoreTex. It’s a sick jacket for sure.

I also have a 3CS jacket which I have been super happy with. To be honest, you don’t need GoreTex in all conditions so you might not want to spend the premium on it. 3CS have a really good range of shell jackets, with some of them up to 30,000 waterproof (comparable to GoreTex): http://3csouterwear.com/products/mens-outerwear/

+1 for Bonfire and Volcom.

I won the Bonfire Chroma last year

10k/10k. Has kept me dry on some rainy days though it is just a 10k jacket so eventually you’d get wet. Not a huge fan of the designs in the Chroma range but other Bonfire gear looks great.

Volcom have sick looking jackets and they use Goretex in some models which is great.

If I ever find the Analog Render in orange in my size I will be snapping that up! Been looking for ages for it!

I absolutely love the AK Stagger jacket.

I’ve been looking at the AK Stagger jacket as it seems to have the tech I’m looking for (providing the powder cuffs are decent?) but one thing I’m unsure about is the insulation. I’ve been looking at a shell as I tend to run pretty hot so I’d hate to defeat the purpose and end up with another jacket which is “too warm”

How have you found the insulation on this jacket vs a pure shell?
