Your travel agent does usually know best, and it’s usually in their interest to be honest as I don’t think they get paid/bonus’s based on what they sell.
Sam, sorry but they don’t always know best and they do get a cut from the insurance companies!!
To get the cheap domestic fare in Japan you have to book in conjunction with your intl flight - I went to 4 different agencies to find one who knew what I was talking about. It was a savings of $200-300!! I wished i could just book online, cause i did all the leg work.
Full disclosure:
Just remember a mate who had a heart attack on the mountain whilst shoveling snow and need to get a pacemaker. Travel Insurance wouldn’t cover it (cause the hospital reports said he was working) so last I heard he was going to have to sue the Mountain.
Anyway this was in the US - the Canada boys will have to tell you whether they have Workers Comp or equiv in Canada. I can’t remember back that far LOL

Just personal experience. In fact, my travel agent was the one who told me the insurance I had in mind wouldn’t cover me instructing in Canada and told me what to look for - they did not offer me any of their insurance providers.
Same with my Sister, her travel agent has consistently given her the best prices and information for travel. Travel agents they lie and sell you packages for their own profit often get a bad rep and therefore less work.
Could be different in Oz though, of course.
My other advise still stands - always look into it yourself for the best idea!
Mizu do you have a hotkey for exclamation points?
Nah, I just got a heap of em to use layin around at home!!!!!

Exactly - I was just saying don’t blindly trust them!

I have to agree with oz!!!!!
The agents get a better commission off every thing that they offer directly by default!!!!!
They do also get commissions off other products though, and if they recommend somethin that is unsuitable (especially if ya request it in writin/email), then they will be liable for damages if it is unsuitable!!!!!
the travel agent my missus wanted us to go through for our USA trip was trying to sell us stuff we didnt need etc.
She didnt count on me doing shitloads of homework on insurance, transfers etc.
In the end i found everything myself for cheaper, we only used her for accomodation in Tahoe (through skimax)
Sorry to revive an old thread but I am still going through the motions with Insurance. I am hoping to go with World Nomads, however the travel agent is trying to scare me out of it to go with Covermore because apparently you aren’t covered completely with World Nomads if you are working on a Working Holiday Visa. Does this mean I’m not covered for the duration of my employment or simply if I have a slip at work then the employers insurance is meant to cover that.
Has anyone had any experience with this?
Cheers!
Look I can’t tell you 100% this is legal advise you are asking here
But, recreational snowboarding or any other activity - your travel insurance should cover you. You would def have a case against them if they didn’t.
If you injure yourself on the job then IF canada have workers comp that should cover it.
My advise if you hurt yourself whilst on the job and you go to the doctor on your own steam and you don’t think it will be a life long injury - say you did it recreationally
Go down the mountain in a blood bucket or an ambo ride in uniform you will have to say it happened at work!
Hey mate,
I’ve been to Canada several times and always gone with World Nomads. If you are employed and you hurt yourself on the job, you are covered by WCB, thus your travel insurance isn’t needed in this particular situation. WCB will look after you. Your travel insurance is needed for all times not at work. I have never had a problem with World Nomads and I find their policy quite adequate and very good value. I have even had to make a claim and had no issues whatsoever. They are overseen by Allianz Insurance.

If you’re ever unsure, then just email them. It’s useful in two ways, 1. you know for certain that you’re covered, as you got the information directly from them. 2. If they ever did try to decline your claim, you have in writing the fact that they said you’re covered for proof.

Yeah I agree with all the above - I’ve always gone WN and even got money back on a claim.
Thank you all for the help. I received an email back from Student Flights today, who are organising my Whistler trip (through WHC), and they price matched WN with their Covermore policy so I am covered regardless of where and when the incident occurs. I have heard great things about Covermore but overlooked them originally because of the price.
great info guys!
after holidaying in whistler for 2 weeks last december/january, i got back and decided i need to move over there for a little while! plan is to go to vancouver and look for IT work, with occasional trips to mountains around the area, or to the states… so pumped!!! somewhat worried about finding full time work straight away but i have 10 years behind me in my field and it seems there’s a decent market for web developers, so i’m confident it’ll work out well
otherwise 3 month boarding trip, so it’s win/win basically :D
Hey there,
For those living in canada already.. if you were to work for the snow season..w hat type of savings would you be making a week if you didnt party up too hard!?
