So I’m thinking it might only be worldtripper on here who might know the deal but please anyone else with info feel free to help.
Been thinking about my pipe dream (it really is a pipe dream, it is more than likely not going to happen) to get a shred in for a couple of days in the US next year on my way to Washington DC (on my way to sweden)...and am quite keen on the idea of Oregon, even if it way out of the way. I’ve seen lots of amazing photos of wilderness areas etc & like the idea of riding somewhere a wee bit unique. If I did manage to swing getting there, it would be in June sometime (I think at least one of the mountains is open til 4th July weekend?)
So I’m wondering about the resorts…Mt Bachelor, Mt Hood and Mt Baker are the ones that come to mind.
Has anyone been to any of these? I love riding park and would love to know if any of these have better park setups than the others. I’ve seen a wee bit of footage of Mt Bachelor, which they were riding in mid-april in Pony Tale.
Any other mountains that have good park setups that I should consider. I’m not talking monster park things - like beginner-intermediate level features.
Are any of them more convenient to get to than the others? cheaper than the others?
thanks in advance for helping my pink fluffy dreams continue!
I’ve actually never ridden in Oregon, I skied in Oregon, though, which says how long ago I lived there.
Mt. Baker is near the Canadian border, you’re about a 6 hour drive from Portland, Bachelor is about 4 hours away, Hood is 60-90 minutes. All of them have very long seasons, and Hood is year-round (technically Timberline which is on the glacier). I think that Hood and Bachelor have excellent parts, Baker is more of a freeride / backcountry kind of place. Hood is of course also the summer center for snowboarding, the big camps are there, and the media and pros descend on the place for the duration of the summer. I’m not sure about the public parks, but it should be possible to ride around Timberline.
Bachelor is near Bend, it’s likely to be a great mix of riding and scenery, especially the McKenzie pass road and the Cascade Lakes highway. Your best bet is to rent a car in Portland and drive around. Don’t forget the coast or the gorge, either. Cheap lodging is everywhere, use Hotwire or Priceline, or camp.
The closing dates for the resorts will vary, but if it’s a snow year like last year, July is a reasonable bet.
