New GoPro Hero 2

Avatar

some old review

anyone had issues with fogging on the GoPro?  Do you use the anti-fog strips they talk about in that review?

I’ve used the GoPro for diving in the Bahamas, and lots of snowboarding in all conditions in Whistler. Never had any issues with it fogging. Never used any anti-fog inserts or wipes.

However I know Mizu had some issue with one of his early surf edits.

Yeah the second time I had ever used the camera was on a humid day, and it spoilt the footage completely!!!!!

Fatima also stole a couple of anti fog inserts off me cause he had the same issue at the shred!!!!!

They are only about $20, can be dried out in the oven and used a billion times over, so bottom line = buy some, and use them EVERY time!!!!! I think that they should come with the camera!!!!!

yeah we had problems with fogging, too and we bought the inserts and the work great. I highly recommend them.

Every layer of plastic or filter you put infront of a lens will reduce image quality.
^depending on the quality of GLASS the filter is made from.

A good housing shouldn’t fog.

There are technics to reduce the likelihood of fogging that I need to double check.

^Note: none of the above cameras in the caparison have 1080p sensors (their footage is upscaled before saving to the memory card-reducing quality)

does the drift have that slo-mo mode the GoPro has?

Yes! 50 & 60 fps @ 720p

But you do need a high end editing program (and knowledge to use it) to take advantage of higher frame rates (fps) to utilise those frame rates for slow-mo.

Generic programs like iMovie will convert 60fps to 24/30fps (PAL/NTSC) during capture - making the use of those modes a waste of time and a marketing ploy to convince you to buy the camera because pro videographers are exited by the product having that ability.

As a consumer - pay little attention to fps (unless it’s under 24fps) if your editing it yourself.
If you want to create sensational slow-mo footage shot at 50/60/120fps get your raw footage edited by a pro who has invested 10’s of thousands of dollars in software & hardware. ie: me (I’m cheaper than anyone)

All the footage I see by consumers (and mostly use as a pro) is shot at 24/25/30fps. It is possible to buy camera’s under $100 that do this. Slow-mo at that frame rate can be 75% without noticeable difference. 60fps is really slow, 120fps is super slow.
Build quality, sensor ability (CMOS) are important but like any photography equipment the LENS is the most important consideration.

awesome info, thanks very much, Spaz.  I had thought it was just a case of importing the 60fps footage into iMovie and setting the playback speed to 50%.  I would have been in for a rude shock!

With so many cameras being released that have high fps it’s only a matter of time until iMovie supports it.

I’ve got access to Adobe Premiere (or premiere elements) through Adobe’s deal with DET schools. Having said that there’s been a few times teachers have asked me for advice on using it, I tend to point them to youtube tutorials as I wouldn’t have a clue where to start. Much like photoshop it looks like a program you need to sink some pretty serious hours into.

Getting one of these cams might finally give me a reason to have a proper look into it.

Premiere is a brilliant program, it’s what I learned to edit on before Apple developed FCP.
It was a pity computer performance back then (1998) meant a crash or overheating happened every 10min on a PC (but then I may have never become a macaddict)

Don’t count on getting too deep into it. Many of it’s capabilities are things you will rarely need but it does free you to have an open canvas to work on, unlike the generic programs (which do a fantastic job).

I should re-visit my editing tips thread…...

I’m pretty lazy so it’s just going to be imovie for any edits I’ll do this upcoming season.

Yeah I watched that the other day, the hero 2 no doubt looks better than the hero 1 and I think it’s hard to go wrong with that purchase. I’m still interested to see a hero2 vs drifthd quality comparison though just like the video you linked but with those 2 cameras. I still like the idea of the lcd screen, remote control and lower profile design of the drifthd but if it turns out the picture quality sucks compared to the hero2 then obviously those advantages are discounted.

You can run an LCD Screen BacPac on the GoPro, and remotely operate the camera from your smartphone!!!!!

IMOH while the GoPro is hideously ugly, it is very practical and damn tuff, plus it has heaps of little add ons and spare parts galore!!!!!

Yeah good point but it’s another expense, I’d also need the tripod mount kit to use with a monopod polecam (though admittedly with the drift I’d need to purchase the waterproof housing) I can’t speak for everyone but operating my smartphone on the snow is painful (gloves off and on all the time) and obviously I don’t make a habit of taking it out in the surf!

Haha ugly indeed but I agree very tough and practical from all accounts and if the picture quality is far superior to it’s peers the appearance can be overlooked.

I have the HD Hero, and I don’t have the BacPac and haven’t really found the need for it as such!!!!! Nor have I found the need for a remote, cause I mainly use it pole mounted as this way takes a better view than helmet mounted anyway!!!!!

I made a crude pole from a cleanin handle and some bits and pieces, that IMO take better footage than anythin on offer by way of commercial monopods that are currently available!!!!!!

A couple of the vids usin my setup!!!!!

Yeah I wanna see that too.  The main drawback with the Drift is that its not waterproof.  yeah I know you can get the case, but that’s a hassle and the gopro is waterproof out of the box.  On the other hand, the fog filters for the gopro sound like a hassle.  I think the image quality comparison will be the decider.
