New GoPro Hero 2

Avatar

Ahh ok thanks for the advice. Hadn’t noticed the FCS mounts you mentioned (I’d only been looking into the outdoor edition of the gp2) and that’s definitely a nice safety precaution

The drift also comes with 3M mounting so could also go that option. Personally either way I’d be pretty nervous about the cam coming off in a decent wipeout so would look into another backup method to attach it to either me or the board.

Looking forward to pic of your pole I reckon the videos look way better than standard helmet mounting.

Yeah, the pole footage is heaps better, but havin said that, a combination of all different angles always looks cool, and with the endless mounts that ya can get for the GoPro it makes it easy to achieve!!!!! Another reason why I went GoPro in the first place!!!!!

Don’t get me wrong either, cause I was in exactly the same position that you are in now, and at the time I had my heart set on the Contour (Absolutely despised the look of the GoPro, havin seen it mounted on peoples helmets a few times at the snow), but after weighin up the benefits, I went GoPro and have been extremely happy with my decision!!!!!

Each to their own but!!!!!

Oh yeah I agree which is why I’m all for everyones opinion as some of the website reviews can be fairly unreliable/biased.

I truly have no reason to side with either gopro or drift, I basically want a decent enough camera to use at Japan to record some memories. From my research the two front runners for consumers comes down to the gp2 and drifthd and I still honestly think it’s hard to go wrong with either option it’s just a matter of working out which feature set will suit me best.

As I’ve been waiting for my duty free period to kick in I’ve had plenty of time to discuss both of the cameras but it’s getting close to the moment where I make a decision and go with it.

With all technology it’s only a matter of time before something better comes out anyway!

drc13,
I’m much the same, I’m undecided about the gopro 2 or drift HD, leaning towards gopro though. I really like all the extra features and cool things about the drift but video footage of the previous drift 170 (or whatever it’s called) is barely up to scratch with the gopro 1 IMO. Plus I remember reading somewhere that the new drift is much the same in terms of video quality to their previous models. I can’t seem to find any real comparisons though between the gopro 2 and drift HD, or even any decent footage of the drift HD. Have you found much video footage of the drift HD??

Dan, the only one i’ve found so far is this:

Hey Dan

I’ve found plenty of drift footage on Drift’s website and it generally looks pretty impressive. However it would be pretty silly to purely base the decision on footage that would probably be post processed to look it’s absolute best (the same can be said for any gopro footage on gopros site)

I have found some footage on youtube from other users of the drifthd and if I’m to be perfectly honest it isn’t overly impressive. This is where it gets tricky though. Drift have made press releases saying that review units as well as other early released cameras were running on a very poor firmware which resulted in some niggly errors as well as suboptimal video quality.

I checked the other day and they have had around 4 firmware releases since release and I recall one mentioning improved exposure at 60fps etc so it would appear that they are taking steps to improve the video quality via firmware updates.

Once again the problem comes back to, we are taking there word for it and I’m yet to come across what I would consider a decent review.

To summarise, I would say the gp2 is a fairly safe decision in regards to having acceptable/decent video quality (although not the absolute best going by spaz’s opinion) You also have the peace of mind that it is a popular camera with a fairly large community and addons available.

In my opinion the driftHD has features that would suit my needs better out of the box than a GP2 but the video quality the big question.

If I knew the quality was going to be as good as the video I posted earlier today I’d snap up the driftHD as that picture quality is good enough for me.

As I’ve mentioned before I’m currently stradling the fence but will soon have to make a decision. Whether I go the safe option (gp2) or be a little more daring and take a punt on a drift

IMHO,

Pros:

Shape / An Unfortunate thing about the GoPro (And believe it or not, I was a retailer that chose not to stock the Original HERO based on the appearance of the thing)

Size/Weight / Not really an issue whatsoever with the GoPro, that I have found

Built in LCD / Available with the GoPro but really unnecessary in my view (However I was concerned initially about this before I bought my cam)

Built in Wireless Remote / Available for the GoPro, but again no biggie without, and probably just another thing to carry/lose/have to put in/out of pocket whilst riding which will defeat the purpose

Built in Tripod Mount / Available for GoPro

Rotatable Lens / Not sure what benefits ya really get from this, but can see why it is needed when mounted on ya goggle strap maybe

Goggle Mount Design so I don’t have to stick anything to my helmet / Helmet Strap available for GoPro that runs through vents on Helmet (Helmet Brand Dependable), and what one of my mates uses successfully for canyoning and skydiving/base jumping

The Price Spaz has offered me / Can’t help ya there

* Just my view on the sitch, and like I said I ran through most of these myself when I was in the market, so I am only offerin my points and in no way encourage ya decision either way!!!!!

Here’s the pole made from a cleanin pole, an FCS plug and some bits from Bunnings, for under $20!!!!!

It extends from about 80cms to about 140cms and can be mounted at four different directions and every angle imaginable!!!!!

Ah I always wondered what that gizmo looked like, Mizu.  Do you reckon it would work ok on a shorter length, say 10-20cm?  I wouldn’t really fancy carrying something that big around.

geez that looks like something I would do when researching some bit of technocrap.

One other thing to note is that some reports are saying the Drift blows out whites in bright conditions, whereas the GoPro doesn’t fare so well with dark conditions.  Maybe take that into account depending on your intended uses.

Azz has got a mono pod that is about that length, but I am yet to see any footage from it!!!!!

Here is a pic of Warren holdin the pole just below the knuckle, so just roughly over half the length of the pole!!!!! 80cms?????

And this pic is rider holdin the same pole when it was collapsed at roughly maybe 50cms????? (Notice that even with his legs tucked while in the air mid-jump, the field of vision is greatly reduced by a distance of 30cms difference in the length of the pole relative to ya hand!!!!!!)

Thanks for the feedback mizu. Yeah the gopro can be accessorised up to match a drifthd and vice versa just a matter of spending more money and balancing priorities. Appreciate the polecam pics as well.

How do you reckon a monopod like this would go?

Haha mudhoney I have been accused of over researching things before. In this case though I have an excuse as I can’t buy until 30 days before I leave for Japan.

Pretty sure that’s the same brand as Azz’s, and while I can’t speak for it I do know that the cheapy that I made has been ran over in the inevitable stack and despite the carnage it still works, and I think that it’s mainly due to it bein out of steel as opposed to the lightweight stainless tube (I think) that the Quikpod that ya lookin at is made from!!!!!! (Quikpod Traveller was the one that I was lookin at, as some of the others were so damn expensive)

Azz had posted a pic of his before I made mine, and that was exactly the same one that I had contemplated buyin!!!!!

However I made my mock up, and before I had got to test it on snow I was actually worried about the eight of it (Due to it bein mainly made out of steel, and then havin a camera on the end of it, plus the fact that it was gonna be hangin out 1m + from my wrist), but after testin it out by takin my Longboard Skatey for a test run with it, soon found out that if ya move ya hand to just below the knuckle then this acts kinda like a counterweight and is therefore actually quite easy to hold for long periods at a time!!!!!
