A cross-country skier has died after falling off a cliff near Mount Hotham in north-east Victoria.

Graeme Nelson, 57, from Eden in New South Wales was skiing with two friends near Federation Hut, on Mount Feathertop.

His body was located on the south-east side of the mountain, the state’s second-highest, in the Alpine National Park around 1.30pm on Wednesday.

he hit a patch of ice, lost control of his skis and fell 700 metres down a precipice at Avalanche Gully.
