Battle of the thin and light laptops

Ozgirl, work would really only care if you exceeded your allowance.  You need to find out what the allowance is, should be able to fairly easy and most ISP’s USB dongle software has usage tracking so you know how close you are to the limit.

No exceeding my my allowance. Cause I would use my own internet.

I am just hoping I can install uTorrent… Some thing I can download and install, some I can’t)

Sorry run that past me again, your own internet is not working?

Is your own internet through a USB dongle?

You want to swap your own internet dongles sim card into the work dongle and use it that way?

I’m sure it would work if they were from the same ISP but if they are different I doubt very much if it would work.

Did that help or have I still not got what your trying to say?

Oh maybe your worried about them seeing what your browsing?  Unless you are on VPN through your works network to access the internet generally they won’t know.  Not unless they call up the ISP to find out.

They may have the capability to block some sites via your ISP though I haven’t really heard of that happening.  I used to work for Siemens and used the work dongle with Utorrent a fair bit, just careful not to go over the limit.

haha!

Okay my own laptop is not working… want to use my work one. I use my personal wifi when working from home.

Worried I will get a nasty email from IT if i start downloading movies etc. So wondered how i can work around that (am assuming even though I will be using my own internet they will somehow know?)

So was going to install uTorrent onto a usb drive and download stuff to that usb drive so work wont find it??

Or am I over thinking it??

Farken finally ha ha ha ha ha!

Ok just download it onto your work pc, download whatever the hell you want on your own laptop, then before you go back to work, go to control panel-add/remove software-uttorent and then remove it.

After that maybe go delete your browsing history as well.  My old work would scan whatever laptops were on the network and you would get a nasty email about unauthorised software being on it.  I did the above and had no dramas.

If you do use VPN to your work network though, do all of the above prior to connecting to your VPN as it’s essentially the same as being physically connected to the network in the office.

Cool Thanks for the tips!

So just add/remove it whenever I want to download?

You can leave the Utorrent setup files on the USB so you dont need to download Utorrent every night after work ha ha ha!  I doubt you will be able to run Utorrent from a USB drive though, never tried it.

Will let you know tonight!

What did you think of the new one i want to buy? seen anything better around?

I like the idea of HP because I already have 3 power adapters!

Hey Oz,

It would be in the registry of your computer so technically they could find out if they wanted to. But from working in IT all these years, I highly doubt anyone will care lol. I would take caution if your company is very nit-picky about stuff but if they are lax like our company it should be fine. You can install to a USB and I would recommend that over installing / uninstalling every night…

On the Linux front, download K-Torrent and sudo that onto the linux. It works as well as u-torrent and is linux native and rocks.

Then onto the laptop in question:
1. It is 17 inch? Are you planning to use this as a desktop at home and never move it? (If so, then why not go with a desktop?)
2. That laptop is a recalled model with a new processor in it (from the dodgey SandyBridge range that was recalled). I would be pretty careful with it as you could be buying a computer that may have a warranty that doesn’t cover everything and could be incompatible with drivers and other issues could arise.
3. A desktop for a similar price would be:
$285 - Intel I7 3.4ghz
$75 -  Asus All in 1 Motherboard
$62 - 8gig RAM
$83 - 2tb hard drive
$99 - Case + PSU
$174 - 24” Monitor
$26 - Decent 2.1 Speakers
$20 - Keyboard and Mouse
$50 - Get someone to put it all together (Which I could do if you could pick it up from North Sydney lol… I don’t have a car for August)

Total: $874
So if you don’t plan to travel with the laptop, you save a few bucks and you get a better computer for your money and a 24” screen over a 17” screen that is attached to your keyboard.

Ah TJ, the labyrinth that is the registry ha ha, you could download a registry cleaner but from what I have been told they ten to wreck more than they fix!

Avatar

Yep, never download a registry cleaner as they only lead to errors.

If you want to be sure to remove everything, you do it manually. The only cleaners I would ever recommend is CCcleaner which works well. I also recommend Avast Free Antivirus for low processor use and runs in the background and I would put Malwarebytes on the PC to stop most malware and spyware.

One good website you guys may not know of is http://www.ninite.com which allows you to tick all your favourite programs and will install them all with 1 click… its awesome!

Got CCleaner, works well, I use Spybot and AVG for nasties.  Seems to go ok.
