So thinking about going down to selwyn this weekend - as is my brother and his small family. Am just wondering if anyone has experience with certain ski areas being protected from crazy westerly winds? I’ve googled a bit and can’t find anything on the net, except that selwyn claims to be protected, but from what direction winds I do not know!
I have been there before when they have said it was going to be moderate to strong winds, and we were fine there and it wasn’t too windy…not sure how it would go this weekend with predicted strong - gale force winds.
Just wondering if anyone has concrete knowledge/experience on this stuff? I don’t have the ability to interpret topographic maps and figure this stuff out for myself. I reckon if you could find somewhere that was going to protected from those winds, you would definitely be in for a whale of a powder weekend!
Yup, the wind situation can make or break your day. Best thing is to ask locally, they tend to know what ski areas or lifts to avoid in high wind situations. Also, if the wind is fierce, riding in the trees is a great way of enjoying the day and being able to see where you’re going.
I can only speak from my time in Tahoe, where the wind pattern is very predictable and you can tell from the cornices which way the wind is blowing.
