Hey guys. I’m going to be driving from Christchurch to Wanaka on Monday 27th June. Leaving around 4pm and (hopefully) arriving before midnight. Looking for anyone that is interested in heading down there and sharing fuel costs.
bout a month too early for my little group. hope you find someone!
Its not going to take you that long from Christchurch to Wanaka unless your planning on doing some murdering ans burying on the way!
thanks guys. what is the drive like i have never done it (or even been to NZ for that matter). Is it relatively easy? is there ever snow on the roads? what is the drive like up to the resorts (cacdrona and snowpark?). I’ll have a 4wd, will i need chains as well?

Hey masoupistoocold, welcome to Boardworld!
The drive to Wanaka is really nice and chilled - not too much you need to worry about. The drive up to the resorts (Cardrona, Treble Cone is particular) can be pretty sketchy. They are windy (lots of hairpin turns), gravel roads, with no barriers on the sides. When I was there, yes there was often snow of the roads. I was driving a 2WD and needed chains approximately every second day - but we did get lucky with the snow. I’m not sure what the rules are for 4WD; I wouldn’t image you would need chains unless there was a lot of snow on the road. Just take your time, drive carefully, and you will be fine.
Theres a few passes that they can close on the way, the one closer to Wanaka is the main one that gets shut down, I forget the name but its about a hr on the christchurch side of Wanaka.
Just check the weather and road reports first, if it looks like being shut go the coast road.
