Hi all
Ive recently been upgrading my gear from my 2006-7 rossignol sultan and HC2000 bindings due to growing since i purchase them back 9 years ago! Im currently 183cm and 86kg and will no longer be growing so id like to have another board i can get at least 10 years out of much like my current board which travelled all around the world with me from Europe to New Zealand last year!
Ive been looking at the 2014-15 GNU high five series with the BTX rocker and the 2016 Lib Tech skate banana or Attack banana. The board i currently run is 150cm and have a feeling it may be to small as it carves amazing however when it comes to stability its very unstable at speed which is different to how i remember it a few years ago. what size would you recommend to suit me?
The new set up will have 2015 burton cartels which i purchased recently and absolutely love! current set up is down below 06-07 RS Sultan, 2015 Cartels, 2009 DC scouts.
Cheers Jesse
Did you say Mervin Manufacturing?
Paging @skip11, paging @skip11.
He’s the guy who knows his Mervin pretty well. =)
At your weight I would say the minimum of 157 if you like to ride all mountain at a small mountain or park. I recommend 161 for a good all around size if you like to ride all mountain.
Don’t get the the skate banana or carbon credit if you’re concerned about stability. If you like to ride fast any of their C3 boards will suit you:
- Gnu Billy goat
- Lib Phoenix Jamie Lynn C3
- Lib Swiss Knife
- Lib Dark Knife
- Lib Hot Knife
All of these are medium - firm flex. The Billy goat, Jamie, and Swiss Knife all have mellow magnetraction and they don’t dig in or randomly catch like full on magnetraction. Jamie will have the mellowest sidecut and will want to go straight and fast. Billy goat also has a bit mellow of a sidecut but not as mellow as the Jamie.
If you still want stability but a bit more playful their C2 and XC2 boards are great as well:
- Lib Lando Phoenix (mellow magnetraction)
- Lib T.Rice or T.Rice HP
- Lib T.Rice Gold Member (directional version of T.Rice with better construction)
- Lib TRS
T.Rice has a bit of a wider waist width (even though it’s not a wide model) compared to some others in the Mervin line so if you have size 9.5 or under boot size I recommend the other models suggested. I personally ride the Lando and love it. Sidecut is the same like the Jamie and wants to go straight and wide open turns. T.Rice and TRS have a bit tighter sidecut and more aggressive mag which I dislike.
I’m personally not a fan of their EC2 and BTX profile as I found it a bit too lose and chattery (the boards are also usually a bit softer in flex with those profile).
Welcome to Boardworld, Jesse!
Are you open to other brand suggestions or are you set on Lib Tech and GNU?
Cheers for the help guys ended up picking up a Lib Tech attack banana 156. set it up with my bindings and everything really pleased with how it feels just on the carpet just to get my stance and everything right. Very excited to hit the snow next year with it as its got excellent flex and just feels like it will be as quick as im looking for with the ability to try other things with it! Also looking for other people who are looking at doing a trip to the snow from SA as I don’t know anyone locally that is into snowboarding or travel! also a few snaps below
Nice! Enjoy your news setup, Jesse! Keep us posted on how you go.
