Yew.tv Surf Film Festival — It’s a Wrap

Avatar

The 2014 instalment of the Yew.tv Surf Film Festival is all over.

The Competition saw 25 Surf Filmmakers from all over Australia & New Zealand battle it out for the top place which included $1000 cash, an internship on The Crew, professional equipment hire, filmmaker seminar access & much more.

The best trailer was chosen by the public where over 1000 individuals voted for their favourite trailer - generating an average of 3000 unique monthly website visitors.

The top 10 was chosen and ranked by Otis Carey & Ben Player. We took the show on the road, premiering these 2-10 minute films around Australia & New Zealand, consisting of documentaries, comedies, longboarding, bodyboarding and of course straight up wave porn.

Set in intimate and iconic venues such as bars, museums and art-house cinemas, we enjoyed an overall attendance of 350 patrons with high profile guys like Otis Carey & Ben Player attending the opening and closing events to mingle with crowd.

A core audience of surfers and creatives, mostly male, but surprisingly with more females than anticipated came & enjoyed their evenings. The age group was mainly from 18 to 30, with a few dad’s that shred and their sons in the mix.

At our final event of 5 we divulged the winners and awarded them prizes, every nominee made sure they attended the grand finale. The Earlybird Trailer winner was Matthieu Glemarec with A Week Of Winter. Best Trailer went to Michael Bilton with Afterdark. 3rd Place went to Shannon Mackie with his film North Coast Diaries, 2nd place and wildcard went to Kaius Potter with STORM & 1st place went to Monty Webber with his film Journey On.

To us, a huge inspiration was the positive feedback we got at the afterparty of each show and it is fuelling us for next year to tackle our Action Sports Film Festival!
