I’ve been trying out a media streaming app called Plex. This is not meant to be a full review, and I’ll probably get jumped all over by the BW nerd faction, but I’ve found it useful.
So you’ve fully legitimately*** acquired some new video content from a reputable**** location and you want to watch it right now on your iDevice or aDevice or whatever, and the damn thing won’t play properly because iDevices are really fussy about the format of the content, or you downloaded the ultra-mega-high-res version that your aDevice can’t decode on the fly. You could transcode it with, say, Handbrake and that will work fine, but it takes time. Sure, if you’re a well-organised and IT-savvy kind of dude you can set up some fancy automation to handle this for you. One alternative is to use Plex. You run a (freeware) server on your PC/Mac/Linux and a (paid) client on your i/a/wDevice. The really nice thing is that when you start to stream a file from your library Plex will transcode it on the fly, so you don’t have to worry much about what format it’s in. It will also keep track of where you left off watching so you can resume watching from the same point (I think that is kept sync’ed across devices but I haven’t tried it). The full version includes the ability to “sync” (download) the transcoded file into your device for offline watching, too. There are a heap of other features I haven’t explored like Chromecast support and library sharing. There are some caveats too. You need to pay for each client (few bucks) and it won’t transcode ISO rips.
