Are you planning on not buying a return ticket?
You should you just get a 12 month open ended return ticket. Good for all number of reasons and typically not much more expensive than a one way ticket.

Can’t ya get an open return ticket?????

Last minute, and the airlines/govt don’t help!!!!! * from what I’ve read!!!!!
Best thing to do is to book an open ended return ticket. Book the return ticket for the latest possible date.
You can always change it bring it forward.
The key is that the ticket is not much more expensive.
The difference will be cheaper than paying for the US visa YOU WILL NEED.
You can forfeit the ticket.
