Wax Layering!
Almost everyday I ride.
This thread has reminded me I haven’t applied a summer wax yet
@spaz: How would you layer wax spaz?
^ wax then scrape, wax then scrape, wax then scrape. This allows for different types of wax to be used depending on where the rider is on the course. The first layer may only be good for about the for 100m. I’ve never heard of more than three layers - starting to get silly IMO. They also use different wax on different parts of the board i.e, center vs near the edges. Some parts of the board will have more snow contact depending on the course. If the course has a long straight first section (as stipulated by FIS), like the Hotham course, then the wax choice will almost be make or break. It wasn’t as critical on the Sochi course however because the start was so gnarly with heaps of air time. Sometimes it’s a bit of a gamble - I remember in one of the Sochi heats where it was clear a rider had got his wax just right as his board was noticeably faster.
Starting to understand why the pros have wax technicians?
Did you notice Torah swapped boards for her 2nd run. Either it meant her first board had a problem, she wanted a longer/shorter etc board, or it was waxed differently. Bet she was the only one to ride a Roxy board!
More like an Apex board with a custom topsheet and a Roxy sticker.
Did I see you guys at the AWM today???

This is for everyday riding not competition.
Firstly; On a fresh snow day I start the day early giving me time to tune edges and Ptex any deeper gouges.
Then do an iron on, scrape it heavily and groom (scouring pad) - for me a powder day means setting a 4am alarm.
Depending on snow quality that may be enough if the pow is deep enough. If the snow is really cold I’ll rub over the iron on with a soft wax - applied with a cloth - has the consistency of lip balm, it gives the iron on a glossy, slimy finish.
Iron on should last a few days and because of the early start I won’t do another for, at least, a few days.
(I should be looking at my wax kit to tell you the brands and proper wax names - sorry). I’ve been using HighBallAlly for iron on is all I know.
Normal daily routine before heading to the lift line is to inspect base, any scuffs or gouges get filled with with a rub on crayon and rubbed back smooth (NB:it’s bad practice to fill gouges with wax).
I love to blast early morn groomers so if the snow allows I’ll apply another coat of of the soft wax. If I’m serious about getting a top speed or longer air I’ll reapply each run.
When the iron on starts to wear out and base drys in places I’ll rub that area with the soft wax.
I’ll do this daily^ until the conditions change.
Soft, melting snow - I’ll often do a top up iron but only groom it lightly so the base has some protection from groomer debri and allows the board to slide instead of bogging down - effectively I’m stopping the base from doing anything. If I’m in a hurry and no time to top up with the iron or the snow is still good; I’ll use a crayon to give it a good rubbed on cover (this most times won’t get groomed because people are whining at me to hurry up (I’m the guy who takes forever, mostly because I also have to gear up my camera’s and strap my knee) but the crayon makes a huge difference to sliding speed compared to a dry base.
The soft wax is only good for 500m or a few runs in powder. People who carry their ski’s/board through the lift line probably have a fresh rub on and don’t want to waste it in the lift line.
Thredbo is difficult to wax for because of the diverse condition and warm valley.
^ wow, that’s crazy. I never wax for day to day riding. If I want to go faster I just do one less turn.

haha this is exactly like me!!
I’ll wax at the start of the season, and i’ll be lucky to do it again. Then ill summer wax my boards at the end of the season.
Although I might have to change my ways if i go to the shred again this year, you guys are fast!
I wax every couple of days or when i notice speed loss.
Well i aim to do that, doesn’t always happen!

+1
I guess my situation is a little different. You know, the amount of time I’m at the snow being pretty much all season.
I’m snowboarding while most other people drive to work, read the paper, take kids to school - or whatever it is other people do..!?
