Ok so I’ve got a 2013 YES Public and I’m trying to keep up with mates and pick up more speed when riding but after a fresh hot wax the base is dried out and slow after 1 run on fresh groomers before even hitting a box.
I’ve been very deliberate about making sure the base is warm enough to open the pores and using correct wax for conditions. I’ve been using beaver wax which comes well enough recommended. I wax the board and wait for it to be completely cool before scraping and then I ride it the next day.
Im not sure what else I can do about fixing the issue or is it something about the YES bases because I’ve never had this issue on any other board I’ve waxed.
I like the board so I want to keep it going at least another season..
The Public has an extruded base, so it will not hold wax as good. You could try leaving the wax overnight and scrape it the next day, although I doubt it will make much of a difference.
So does my other board but it seems to hold it at least for 3 days of solid riding before starting to show signs of drying out..
Wondering if a coarse base grind would help open up the base better to hold wax or just ride the crap out of it and put up with it?
Try taking it to Underground Tuning. I think Yohan will be able to tell you better what’s wrong with the base. My friend has a 2012 YES Basic which still has a sintered base and Yohan said something to do with the quality control in the factory made the base basically sh*t. But since YES moved to GST factory it shouldn’t be a problem anymore.
I had an Endeavor that did this. Not when it was new though, at least half a season in.
The solution I found was *drumroll*............. Don’t buy another Endeavor lol.
But seriously, I didn’t actually find the cause. It may be a manufacturing thing. I got mine base ground (a serious one). But after a week it was straight back to drying out again.
And I wax my boards on time, all the time.
Sorry I don’t have a better answer for you cause I know u like that board. Maybe email YES and ask them about it, send pics etc. They may warranty the board or know a way to fix the problem.
Also, how hard are you scraping it?
Extruded bases wont hold wax like a sintered base due to the manufacturing process. Extruded is just that, pushed out of a machine while its in a semi molten state. Sintered base is made from pellets of polyethylene that are squeezed together, leaving tiny pores that the wax will go into.
If you can get a really nice structure on the bottom of your extruded base its going to hold a bit of wax, but its always going to dry out much faster. We find that belt grinds are holding more wax than stone grinds as the stones get the base much smoother without leaving as many little scratches that wax can get into like the belts do.
Try using a rub-on wax (see belt wax) or even a liquid/gel style wax.
I often use a gel type of wax when I see my base drying out. It’s especially present on my 4000 Ceramic Sintered base (K2 Zeppelin).
My assumption is a sintered base is designed not so much to be compatible with iron on/hot wax.
I think I’ve heard a sintered base is fine without wax.
I’ve found dirty snow (like late spring or after dust storms) makes wax work like glue and you get more speed with a dry base.
As a ski tech in a hire shop we didn’t wax anything for the last few weeks of the season.
Wax holds better with a clean base so try hitting it with a pressure hose whenever possible to clean out any microscopic grub.
