Since the shred I have been looking a bit more into different types of boards (thanks to the guys at the shred for teaching me a thing or two btw!). My first board was a present and the people who bought it for me were pretty clueless, luckily they actually picked a decent board that has been great to learn on and that i really like! Recently however i have found a board that seems exactly like what i want in a board and that will suit where i want to progress to. The bf thinks I’m crazy cos my current board is only a year old and in pretty good condition and it got me thinking that there are plenty of other reasons that people may decide to get a new board other than the fact their old one has had it! I wont be seeing any snow till our season next year so my plan is to go demo the board next season and see how i like it and if its as good as it sounds then buy it!  But the whole thing has made me curious as to what makes people decide its time for a new board?

I don’t think anyone really needs a new board, unless it was a complete dog for them to start with????? Or they break it, but there’s not too many of us that would put our boards through that type of treatment!!!!!

That’s why I voted for the last one!!!!! cheese

I get new boards when I find them on sale. That’s why I have 12 right now!

I voted for the top option, but really I would have voted for “all of the above”. I’m motivated by all those points, but probably more by the one I voted for. I never buy a board for the sake of it, I’m always looking for it to meet a specific need. That said, I usually ride a board until it’s completely trashed, so my replacements are often because the “old board has had it”.

My new one is because I want something more playful than my current board. But the main reason I buy a new board is because I really like the board after I demoed it.

. . . the main reason I buy a new board is because I really like the board after I demoed it.

I’m scared to demo boards now - for that exact reason.  downer

My sentiments exactly.  I’m waiting until the snow season is over in North America and then I’ll purchase a new board on ‘clearance’ while it’s still full priced in Oz.

The board i want is on sale.. Just trying to weigh up how awesome a new board would be VS. how much trouble i would get in for buying a new board raspberry

I voted “old board has had it” its not completely gone.. But its pretty bashed up.. Its was my only board for almost 3 years..  And Mr.h0z saw me looking up boards and was talking to me about it.. And knowing i have a Japan trip i knew i wanted to get another board before then.. (one slightly more for powder.. But that could still be a park board)  so he surprised me with a new board.. I’ve ridden the old one a few times since though!

in saying that, i brought an intermediate to advanced board for my first board as i had learnt on rentals for 1 1/2 seasons..  so i think if you have a beginner board and want to get another board to improve more or to learn more specific types of riding,, then why not? It will only progress you more.. And that’s alot,of why we do this right? Have fun and learn something new?

imo.. Try the board, if it feels right.. Go for it!!

I think you make some very good points h0z! There is a decent difference between the board I have (2011 Ride Rapture) and the board I want (2014 Gnu B-Pro). Having gone from rental board to my current board I have no idea what style of board i prefer so I think I’m just going to have to hold out and wait till next season and try it before I buy!
