What about when you’re o/s? I’m not near an embassy!
There was an election here (though not federal) when my parents were away in April. When they got back to Australia they had to get in contact with the electoral people and explained the situation and I think they still had to vote at that point.
They weren’t fined or punished in anyway.
*May be different for federal so still worth looking into.
Billy, go to this page and postal vote:
What are the deadlines for postal voting?? Might be hard for Billy.
But DRC is right, you don’t get a penalty if you are overseas.
They provide you with the ability to postal vote or consulate/embassy vote for those who care. But no you are not punished if you don’t. Even if you live there
(person who has been OS numerous times during elections and mum just rung up when when the fine came in and said check her passport… LOL nothing further happened)
Thanks Oz for information…
I already post the postal vote…
all electors in my group has applied and posted too except
one wanted go to Jindy for ballot day and wanted to see the scenery around on the same day.
I’ll pass detail to him
you have until the friday before the election (5th I think?) to apply for a postal vote. I applied ages ago and they sent me my voting papers from Australia to Washington DC and it only took about 5 days for them to arrive here.
So if you have any fixed addresses then you can maybe order them ASAP to turn up there?
otherwise, as OZ says, you can get away with not doing it because you were overseas.
I’ve never voted at the chapel in Thredbo.
Every other election they used the Leisure Center. I’ve voted in there twice over the years. One year I got it in before the lifts opened, the other I did at lunch time. Both were quiet so maybe they decided it was to big an area to take up.
Early you will get many locals in there before they start work for the day.
I’m sure there was an election during my first season at Perisher and I remember snowboarding to the polling booth - which 15years ago was at the post office, which is not where it is now.
