Another Newbie here! 

Awesome thread, I wish i’d discovered it a few months ago when I was going through the hassles of applying for my visa.
I’m flying into Vancouver on Oct 27 and planning on heading up to Whistler for the November job fair. Fingers crossed there’s still some jobs available! Anyone know of any good hostels in Van?

Hey Caity, a big group of us also get in on the 27th are you flying AirNZ? We are all staying at the SameSun (huge liklihood its booked out as we went through TWHC and have a feeling we have taken over the place around that time but the HI on Granville St is across the road and you can rock on over to Samesun and meet a whole bunch of us We are heading up to Whis on the 1st

bad news guys wasn’t shortlisted for the tickets and validation job. Looks like im going have to wing it handing out resumes and the like! any other suggestions im all ears

Must be something wrong with your resume? Check the main page for a good example or send it to me and I’ll try to fix it up to make it look better for you

Have you tried other mountains? There are tons of fantastic places in Canada and you’ll have a blast no matter where you end up!

Thanks tj I have considered other mountains but am pretty much set on whistler and am more motivated then ever to get a job.

With regards to the resume they cited “not enough recent experience” which is all my personal training work since I haven’t done anything else for 5 years but could be the wording ill send it through tho and like people have said opportunities arise maybe later in the season if I hate the job

Yeah mate, make sure you make it sound like an actual job and not just a hobby or a course. I’m sure you’ll be fine, maybe even go a non-whistler job and work in a hotel or a shop?

I wouldn’t stress guys. When i was a liftie at Whis in 09 I rocked up without a job in december and got a job at Longhorns Pub- then got offered a liftie job in the last hiring of staff on the 22nd of December. It’s not ideal and was kinda stressful but if your dead keen you can make it happen.

otherwise yeah consider other mountains. a mate went to fernie and LOVED it. really small close knit group. awesome snow and fun times.

Jealous of all of you! i’ll be sleeping on finneys couch from time to time in january so i’ll see you all then haha.

Focus on customer service aspect as well.

I would think personal training would be an asset. So yeah make sure you sell it right on your CV.

So how are you guys proving you have 2500+ in your bank account? And also is there a minimum of travel insurance required to recieve the full 2 year visa?

I think a recent bank statement is meant to be fine. I’m not sure what to do about travel insurance either… Apparently they’ve been getting pretty strict with checking insurance, I don’t really want to buy a full two years though.

Say that you’re getting like 6 months and then will extend it without snow cover or whatever, they will understand

Yeah I’m staying samesun in October just for Halloween then heading back up to Whistler again..

I’ll be heading up to whistler on monday 23rd to the hi hostel if anyone wants to grab a drink.

You’re leaving van the day i get there. have you got your sin,bank account and a phone set up?

Money in the bank with a statement or a printout or something like that.

Just say you’re only planning to stay for 6 months therefore the insurance only lasts that long. You don’t need to actually leave then. And you’d be an idiot not to extend if you stay longer… So much things you should have cover for!
