OldvNew (MY68VW thread so spaz stops hijacking others)

I can’t fault most of what you’ve said NBG.
You’ve witnessed VW passion so have some appreciation that VW are not just cars (there is some truth to the Herbie movies)  tongue wink
My guess is DaddyNBG’s engine choice was the 1300, notorious for starting first go after 50years sitting in a field (new oil and fuel poured in carby only). Or running oil free on full revs for 15-25min before seizing - most engines don’t last 8min on this test.
VW1600 engine are very good and has been the back-up motor for Kosci chair for +40years.

WRX out performs a Lamborghini Gallardo on track so that’s a silly comparison (but I hear the argument you’re making).
The handling set up on my VW out performs a 2011 GTi Golf on track, lap after lap - but not a GolfR (4WD) - been there, done that.

So no! it’s not best in a straight line, it’s in the corners it can show-off but overtaking on a highway it shines (+100kmh), there it’s in a league with motorbikes, not cars.

My average, travel time from Thredbo to Jindy is 25min, coming back up it’s 20min (summertime speed limits - no traffic, done safe and legal).
On an empty, controlled Alpine Way (downhill) I did it in 13.5min - tailing a WRX from NP gates (slowed me down going up hills). I have a top end rev-limiter that slowed me on the straights.
You should see it do DHG-Leatherbarrel Creek and back (I have video somewhere).

I have daily access to Mercedes C200 (and 2 other 2012 cars), currently do most my driving in a Ford Territory (3000k/month), have done track days in $600K production cars! So already have the luxury of driving new cars, but in saying that you can bet I’m thinking about MY68VW and would prefer to be in it - the joy driving it surpasses any car I’ve Driven, unless on +30? days. A/C would cost me $3K to install in the VW.

The graffiti on the side is my business name, so you can guess what has been claimed on tax.
The costs over 12y (minus fuel) = $35/week, the insurance company has rewarded my “safety” improvements - full Comprehensive Insurance is $350/year and includes keeping the car if written off.
What’s full insurance cost on a $67K Holden?

My mechanic doesn’t charge me labour (hence the long period it’s been off the road getting the gearbox), that’s the trade off.
During the resto I surfed everyday and can’t apply a time wise estimate on that labour.
I know I enjoyed it! and feel more satisfied than if I walked into a dealer and payed for a car I would see in traffic every other week next to me. It was also a lifelong goal.

You’re 100% I won’t sell this car.
The prices I gave allowed for what people pay - not what I think it’s worth.
There’s one on ebay now, unregistered since ‘06, poor quality paint/interior, ending tonight - bids are nearing $2,000
Carsales have them from $4k - $13K (most are $7K) eg: http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/volkswagen-1600-1973-14360093?eapi=2&base=1216&vertical=Car&cr=8&find=type

MY68VW appeals to everyone, 3yo kids point it out to mummy, tuners love the engine noise, the V8 crew are in disbelief at the performance and VW lovers follow me, leave notes or wait to chat about the not-so-obvious improvements they spot.

At the end of the day it’s a personal choice. I love classic cars but prefer new performance and fittings so I’ve incorporated both into a dream car but feel I’m better off financially and have a much cooler ride than 99% of people.

Could have been the 1300, I haven’t had the opportunity to ask since the last post but you can almost guarantee I will forget to when I next see him.  I’m not sure that I would put my old man in the VW enthusiast club but in comparison to his other vehicles I guess they at least had some character and car enthusiast credentials.

I would be interested to have a ride in yours for a seat of the pants test, I have been in quite a lot of modified cars over the years, some I liked others I have hated.  I’m not really a fan of VW’s but I would buy an Amarok, none of the other vehicles past or present really do it for me to be honest, I can appreciate some of them being quite nice looking but that’s about it.

If I’m going to go old school it would have to be Holden and some ridiculously sized V8 in the 427, 454 range that makes the earth shake and small children cry when it passes through town.  Unfortunately my favourite HG, HK, HT Monaro’s are a bit of a fantasy price wise but this is the sort of thing I would have for a Sunday car if funds were no issue.

As money is an issue I would probably end up with something like this although I would hunt for a 1978 model, the year I was born so there’s a little more relevance.

Not sure where the $67k Holden figure comes from, my last SSV with all mods listed was about $1000 a year fully insured for about $5000 over market value.  I turned 30 at some point in the ownership which helped and as of right now haven’t had a speeding fine or any traffic infringement for 6 years so I do ok with no claim bonus and that sort of thing.

I still have some reservations about the whole situation, it’s all fine to pay to play when you have the money to spare, I recollect at various times seeing that you have/did/do(?) receive govt assistance and I find it hard reconcile what appears at face value to be an indulgent expense whilst receiving govt benefits.  I don’t know your exact situation obviously but that’s just my perception based on the narrow FOV into your situation that your BW posts have allowed me to see.

I don’t know how long until it’s back on the road as I have a few bills I need to catch up on.
The best I can do for now to give you a ride is via this 9min vid doing the drive from Leatherbarrel Crk back to Dead Horse Gap 11km and a total rise in elevation of 500m.

This is the only footage that isn’t locked up in a dead HardDrive - I had several cams running and had intended to edit it all together.
From memory the rev limiter in 2nd is around 50mph (maybe), I hit a couple of times especially on one set of corners.
4th is sort of an overdrive gear.
I’m nursing the gearbox as it’s the stock box.

The top speed I hit is 140kmh.
It’s a road with mostly a clear view of oncoming traffic even though it has may corners, wherever I can’t see the road ahead I’m being weary of oncoming traffic and slow down. The speed limit is 80kmh. At the end I had been accelerating from 60kmh for 500m when I saw my landlord and jumped on the breaks - it pulled up in around 15m, you can see her friend jumping out the back of her car from fear, my landlord is a car nut and had scrutinised my68vw, and seen me drive many times, notice she doesn’t even flinch. She told me she had heard the car coming for 3-4min and wondered if it was me. My girlfriend was in the passenger seat the whole time and we were chatting most of the way. She drove us out there and until I saw this footage I thought it was me driving driving downhill - it was pretty agressive as well. The car makes you feel very confident. This footage coming back up is me driving.

I think I may have previously posted this on here but a mate and I went out to get some footage of our cars, I primarily as I was about to sell mine and wanted some footage for posterity so I can show my children when they are of age that Dad owned a V8, a most antisocial style of V8 into the bargain.  I may never have a another one and the sound it made was truly amazing if your into V8 supercar style sounds.  I am obivously and other than perhaps a few supercars like the Pagani really can’t think of a better automotive noise.

This second one is in car from a drive when I was living in Melbourne, the ex GF was none too keen on what was taking place as you can hear in the vid and the quality of the filming is shit as a result but the main thing for me is the sound!

Na the car in front ceased all offensive driving capabilities so that was it.  I don’t remember a fight, or else I didn’t really care….................

This is the closest i can find to what mine sounded like;

Actually i lie,

This is what mine sounded pretty much exactly like but my idle was set at slightly lower revs

hahaha,
gotta say my gf was a pretty cool chick (until we separated) she liked my driving and from the vid posted, commented afterward “What! you only hit 80-85 on the speedo, that’s not that fast!” I then explained it was in mph and did the conversion for her, she then said “I still think you could have gone faster”.
That afternoon we didn’t fight, we did the opposite for the second time that day.

Funny, when we separated she tried to have the cops take my car off the road - didn’t happen! the cops checked out my car and liked what they saw.

Dylan that BA XR8 needs all the noise making it can to push the feral bull bar and spotlights. Fair dinkum that bar must weigh as much as my68vw on it’s own!!

I like rotarys but not a big fan of the noise they make.

As for V8’s best I owned was a 350, 60thou bore that could spin all 4 wheels for 5sec on a short wheelbase landcruiser. In 2WD it popped wheelies in a 2 tonn truck.

MY68VW is the loudest car I’ve owned.
I’ve owned (as far as noise is concerned) an rx4, 350chev, 308 holden and 6cyl holden red fully worked, which was pretty loud and the only one that came close to the noise the dakdak makes.

Actually, as the efi tuning is being more refined the noise level is less (or more pleasant anyway). I drive it with 5” of foam in it to reduce the sound and that’s after completely sound proofing both inside and out of the engine compartment with high grade noise suppressant materials. Which also act as great insulation when sleeping in the snow.
The only thing I can do now is install a butterfly exhaust tip.

Every person that is a passenger with me I warn to let me know if they feel uncomfortable with my driving. Even the most nervous mention how they like my driving. Even my mum who has died 3 times in car accidents (clinically), she still leaves claw marks on the dash but says it’s not my driving.

haha it was a cause of, yea loose abit of power & make noise that can be heard from over 1.5km (tested) away, bullbar only takes 2 ppl to lift it off, makes light work of roo’s tho LOL
