Is there any way to connect a MacBook Pro to an iMac, purely to use the laptop as a disc drive for installing software to the iMac?
Yes. It’s automatically set up do this, and it couldn’t be easier.
Join two together with ethernet, switch on the original, then turn on the second, you will be prompted from there
^ No need. As long as both Macs are on the same network, you can do it via WiFi.
Click on wifi and select “create network”. On other computer click on wifi and select the network you named on other computer if you don’t have wireless network set up.
There are a few ways to do it.
You can also connect via Firewire - which is faster than wifi but a little slower than (cat6) ethernet which is 1GB/s.
Ethernet is the best option.
You will need to select “DVD or CD sharing” in system preferences of the host computer.
Easy, thanks guys!
Of course it’s easy, it’s a mac!
You’ll also be able to easily copy your, ummmmmm ‘extensive movie collection’ across to your new computer via WiFi Jez. (who knew there was an entire gay porn genre solely dedicated to figure skating?!?!?!?!)
Jez tells me the “Triple Axel” 3-way collection is a particular favourite.

Best practice is to use migration assistant as it prevents any data loss/corruption.
But in this case corruption seems to be unavoidable.
Migration assistant. Like button(maybe I could have a smiley like the Billy one??? but without the beer
