anyone done it & know of any good spots near thredbo (or perisher).
We’re gonna sleep in the van on sat night & just wondering about easy & free places to park it!
Yeah, there’s a few options - best really depends if you intend to ride PB or thredbo.
For thredbo there’s 2 camping grounds by the river just out of town (the Jindy side) - these are best as they’re closest to town (within 5 min drive). There’s also a small camping ground down the other side of DHG on leatherbarrel creek and a much larger one on the Murray River at the bottom of the valley…. but these are further away & a bit more of a hassle.
For PB best options are at Island Bend (down the guthega road), which is about 10-15 min to front valley or guthega…... just after the road splits into two there’s a ‘rest area’ on the left. That’s where I usually stay. There’s also plenty of options down the labrynth of roads behind the old airstrip opposite said rest area.
Once you’ve paid your park entry fees all these options are free to camp. They also have pincic tables, fireplaces and pit toilets (except at Island Bend behind the airstrip, which has none of these).....
Hope this helps.
I’ve also seen a good camping ground maybe about half way between Jindabyne and Thredbo, just off the Alpine Way. Is that one of the spots you’re talking about, cuthbert?
Yes, that’s them. Heading from Jindy the first one is only a km or two past the Nat Parks entry gates (about 10 min drive to the village turnoff) and the next is a few kms up the road (would be less the 5 min from the village trunoff). One’s called Thredbo Diggings and the other Ngarigo (or similar) - both are sign posted.
Both are nice spots on the river, but the first one you come to driving from jindy (think its Thredbo Diggings) is a better option IMO. More private/sheltered, closer to the river etc
thanks for the help…we ended up staying at Thredbo Diggings, after having checked out both. Really nice spot, heaps of room, not many people…kangaroos jumping around etc. Gonna do the same again this weekend I think. It wasn’t too cold at all. The sun comes up early enough that it warms up pretty quickly in the morning, too. Not sure I’d want to do it in the dead of winter but its a good way to save some money. The campfire keeps you warm/dries you out anyway!
Sounds like fun, I’ve been meaning to check out that camp spot for a while. Did you get any photos?
yeah I took a few but it was mainly just of the kangaroos & the campfire. Will take a few proper shots this weekend and post them up.

Can’t wait for the weekend & to be back there again!
Looks great, thanks cords. Enjoy your weekend trip!
I have done it a few times this year, I stayed at Kozitreat it is 500m after the national park gates on the way to perisher. If your going to do it make sure you have the right Equipment, I use a -12 Sleeping Bag, i elevate my self of the ground with a camp stretcher and sleep in a Reasonable dome tent with a Vent on the roof,
kozitreat is good, They have a full working kitchen, Hot showers and a drying room for you wet gear, Sites are something like $25pn for 2 ppl
if you want to know anything else give us a holla!
Some good info here guys, thanks.
Fus30n, Kositreat looks like a great cheap place to stay. For anyone that’s interested, here’s there site http://www.kositreat.com.au/tariffs/snow-season.html
and here’s some info about the free facilities, like cooking, wood etc http://www.kositreat.com.au/caravanscamping/camp-sites-a-onsite-vans.html
It looks like it’s $27 per night for 2 people camping in peak winter time. Probably worth that little bit extra money over the other campsites if you are getting a shower and dry boots the next day…
Ngarigo and Diggings can be very, very, very cold and if it snows heavily your going to want a 4WD to get out, even chains can be required for a 4X.
It is possible to hitch from there. And they aren’t that far from the skiTube if your a Perisher rider.
With a good camping set up staying BC is a great option.
