Hi Gamblor, nice work. That reminds me of the Grand Designs episode (S4) where the German Huf House builders get a whole house built in four days. OK it was prefab, but it was still cool. Ahh those dastardly germans and their efficiency.

WOW, thats fast !!!

questions….

1. How many blokes working on site that day?

2. Was everything cut to size off site?

Avatar

1. not sure. will get back to you on that one
2. yes, everything was cut by computer off site. they had a part number for every piece of wood, along with my name on it!

Very impressed with it all.

Interesting reading Deano’s comments, I wonder how the cost would compare to doing it the same way in Australia?

If lots of blokes and cranes v’s fewer blokes and longer time.

I know myself, I prefer the speeder aspect of the build.

Hanging to see more pics of it all coming together as it gets fitted out and finished off. smile

the remainder of the building will take til December, but we will be consulted as they go along (on things like stairway height clearance and other things which I don’t know about yet).
We had a week holiday so no work was done, but they’ve got the roof shingled now after 4 days work.

Here’s the view from last week. You can see the roof colour.

Thanks for posting the pic !!!

I am a bit slack at getting into the photog section. red face

So you have a basement? I can see the windows (???) Mate they use some decent sized timber in the frame.

The crossed timber? Is that for earthquake strength?

The roof tiles, are they terracotta?

I wish I could come and have a look !!!!!

your not wrong about the size of the timber! its massive

Around the bottom floor, I can see something painted(?) on the frame up to about the 600 - 700mm mark, what is that?

No problem Azz, come and have a look!

Yes, the crossed timbers are for super earthquake protection. This company builds in the Japanese pole & beam style but reinforces it with the ‘x’s, so according to them they are building in the 2x4 style too. anyways, it’s super strong. The painted bits at the bottom ... I am guessing that that is pesticide against white ants. It lasts 5 years. I will ask if I remember next time I meet the builder.

We went and got a super nice couch but it’s slightly too big and we have to move the heater somewhere. That’s our new problem.

Oh, and what do you guys think about all-electricity? I’m having 2nd thoughts now about whether it will be cheaper due to all the power plant problems we’re having. Also, if the power goes down, we can only use the gas bbq!

I would personally go for all electricity, as these days any power outages are either from somethin massive like a natural disaster or they are only for a very short period anyway (I am guessin that this is also the case in Japan????)

Gas in a natural disaster such as an earthquake is a major contributer to destruction and loss of life!!!!! The first images to come out of any major earthquake are that of burning gas mains and houses!!!!! Gas is also toxic unless properly vented with a flue, and sometimes wont work without power anyway due to electronic pilot lights, so forth!!!!!

Back up power can be sort from solar/battery banks/generator in extended periods anyway!!!!!

If gas heating is separate from everything else, then you are payin for the service throughout the summer when it’s not needed also!!!!! (Again this is the case in Aus, so it might be different where you are????)

Just my honest!!!!! I don’t like gas!!!!! (Incase ya haven’t noticed)

Theres a reason the expression used to describe when things are really humming along is “cooking with gas”.  Its just better and as far as heating goes, gas is insane!  With that said our heater wont go without electricity for the fan but we can run it all the time and pay a mirconth of the cost for running an electric heater.  Our place has a solar HW with gas back up and solar panels for power as well, will be interesting to see what happens next power outage during the day!

I have had wood heating all my life!!!!!

A bit of work, but hey it’s the BEST form of heating bar none!!!!!
