4X digital zoom actually!
So far all Drift products are cheaper than GoPro and I guess this will be also. They also come better accessorised.
Is It waterproof? The cross over use of surfing and snowboarding is pretty high up on my list of capabilities of pov cams.
Hey Banger, I’ll take this one as I’m in the surf all the time. It’s well waterproofed enough for snow use and heavy rain /splashes (moto etc) but i wouldn’t take it out in the surf. The water pressures are a whole other level there. There still hasn’t been a better set-up for surf than the GoPro (with the exception of the H2O perspex housing for the Contours, but at a significantly increased cost and size)
GoPro still has the market nailed in the surf area - would be great to see a camera competitive to it in this arena, but still waiting…
Although in that promo vid they take it fully underwater in the swimming pool (if I remember right). Gotta be pretty good water proof for that surely.
^yeah Dan , there’s ‘waterproof’ and there’s waterproof. What we’re finding is the pressures under surf waves are massive. even just 4 footers (we measure waves off the back, so a 4 foot wave will have an 8 foot face for example) will fold most ‘waterproof’ cams. I’ll regularly go out in 6 and 8 foot swells (when we get them) , like the other week and cams that will survive that I classify as water proof. It comes down to a depth rating. If they’re rated anywhere below 10m depth (1 atmosphere of pressure per 10m depth in water), they’re what i classify as ‘showerproof’ - you can take them in a pool or still water and they’ll be fine.
We surf shallow reefs, so the water isn;t that deep , but the waves are heavy and the pressures are insane.
Like Mizu said, the GoPro’s you can take anywhere and do almost anything to.
but if it wasn’t surf waves you were going into and just needed melted snow type proofing, showers and some pool dips - the Drift has this amazingly beautiful lens quality which takes it to another level, plus the mini zoom fn.
so the tip:
Check the depth rating when you’re talking waterproof (they all have to have one if they say they’re waterproof) and that is your best guideline.
@banger - yeah one of our team riders used to take the sickest barrel footage in NZ with a Vio, but the water got to it eventually and it failed (damn shame) and he is solely using the GoPro now. I’ll put 2 of his clips in to show you’ just cos they’re cool.
cheers,
Doc
Vio (before waterlogging)
Current GoProHD
There is a H2O bag for drift that is 1 atmosphere.
It looks the same as the H2O bag for vio, which I gave a good workout. They don’t last forever if not handled well, mine lasted three years.
