I’m a Canon guy so won’t be of too much help on specifics of the SB700, but I’ve found strobist to be a help in the past (try to get through the dry bits, and fashion photography crap haha - there’s lots that can be applied to shooting action and helping your understanding of light):

Also worth googling for examples of their really interesting flash work in snowsports are Grant Gunderson, Dan Carr, Dan Himbrechts and Dave Lehl. Plenty of others too! I always find that collecting images I like and then deconstructing how light was used in them is very helpful.

I’m still learning myself but if you have any questions, shout out and I’ll do my best.

unless you’re shooting at night, a speedlight will do jack for a cliff in daylight. You need big strobes for that.
just work on shooting in natural light

So I managed to achieve squat…..

The flash unit was in my backpack which somehow got unloaded from the van at our accom. I was at the carpark at perisher when his was discovered and couldn’t force myself to drive back to Jindy on a first lifts sunny saturday. Nigt riding got canned by our crew after this discovery, with the plan to hike some features Sunday night, but the weather turned Saturday evening and we got rain and zero vis the next day. Rode all day and made good progress which made up for it… So next trip it will be back on!
