Tutorial: How to Fit Snow Chains
Just a heads up to anyone from New South Wales coming to Victoria (if you don’t already know)
It’s mandatory by Victorian law for ALL vehicles to carry chains (even 4WD). Fitting is usually a different matter.
as opposed to all cars in NSW except 4wds have to carry them? which is the case here im pretty sure.
Which reminds me of one of my trips to Selwyn last year. I got a ride with friends who hadnt done much snowboarding and when were were 30ks id say from Selwyn the signs come out saying you must have chains on. I said nah it didn;t snow last night and they would’ve cleared it by now! it will be fine! its 1030am and been sunny for hours. I got outvoted we returned to adaminaby, bought chains, drove back and put them on, went 15-20ks and hour for the rest of the trip, got to Selwyn hours later without seeing so much of a flake of snow of the road. one of the hazards of going with clueless learners!
dug 1 2wd out of the snow on the way to DHG yesterday
pushed a subie up the hill (AWD doesn’t mean you will make it)
watched a few heros in 2WD think that if they drive faster they will make it without chains
saw a few 4WD struggling on icey roads
UMM, leaves me thinking if its just going to be easier to buy ski tube tickets and train it up or drive the forester?? dilemas, what do people think from experience?
Drive. Waste of time and money getting the tube.
The only time it might be worthwhile is if the road to Perisher is covered in snow, which doesn’t happen too often at all.
SWEET, generally is it too difficult driving up the mountain with ice ect.

Funny you say that, the road was closed to traffic going up the mountain yesterday from the NP entry gate!
Im going up Friday week and we are just getting the tube. Only cause there is 9 of us and some people are too scared to drive through!
in all my years i ahve never had any trouble driving up.
once they were checking for chains but cause we were in a liberty gt b spec subaru(awd) they let us through but apart from that its highway cruising almost.
Mates used to catch the tube until i told them ” why pay $12+ eacg to get there when you can get a np pass for like $20(the exact amount escapes me) per car?
yeah heaps easier too i suppose as you can leave stuff in the car so your not carrying it around all day.
and makes it easier to refill my camelpack with booze from the car

After going all over the shop yesterday, we headed over to Selwyn Snowfields only to get turned back aswell because of the conditions. The roads where that bad yesterday, but some people were not putting on there chains.
So after heading back towards Cooma there were so many cars sliding all over the shop, car crashes, car’s blocking the road….
Dead set if i was one of the RTA people helping these fool’s, there would of been so many murder’s at the snow yesterday!!!! Jokes!!!! But if i was….. look out
