Surf Photo Thread…....?

That was probably why it hadn’t bothered me as I wasn’t really focussed on the buildin at all!!!!!

Havin said that, I have not liked the crooked horizon in some of the snow/skate shots once Gamblor had pointed them out!!!!!

I can see were you are coming from but i just prefer my edit as the wave looks a lot bigger and powerful, most surfers wouldn’t even notice the background… its all about the wave and surfer most of the time.

obviously the cropped version doesn’t look as good as you’re losing a lot of the wave.
You saying “most surfers wouldn’t even notice the background” can be applied to any photo. “Most [insert sports practicioner] wouldn’t notice the background if [insert favourite pro] was doing something sick”.
That’s fine if you’re just out to make photos for the common man who is easily pleased, but if you want to make truly great photos then you have to go that extra mile.

just looking through these photos:
http://surf.transworld.net/1000104592/features/the-10-best-surf-photos-in-the-history-of-transworld-surf/

you can see the horizon is off is some of them but not including the first shot, it works. in some of them you’ve got a french fred effect going or the off-kilter horizon makes a good leading lines with the wave. The first shot isn’t straight but it’s not that noticeable, and the action/wave is so overpowering that it’s alright

anyways, we’re just having a chat here. I do like your shots. Let’s go for a beer next time I get to the Gold Coast

I think that there was only one that was in line with the horizon in that bunch!!!!!

Agree:

Surfers are removed from the greater world of the horizon, in the dimensional space of a wave so much is going on (wave moving forward, tumbling energy, surfer experiencing 4 dimensions (4th=time)) the horizon plays little part of that world/experience - kinda like in space or being part of the whole planet, the horizon is irrelevant.

BUT!!! viewing photos of surfers is often done by none surfers (surfers are really only surfers when in the surf) so a perspective that can connect them in is needed.

Depends on the shot and how relevant the horizon is.

these pics remind of the one time in my life I got ‘tubed’. I was riding my grandma bike with a basket on the front in a typhoon. So, think torrential rains times 1000. Then this car drove by fast and hit a puddle (small lake) which sent a huge wave above me. I didn’t make it out of the tube, but I thought surfing must be awesome!

My Brother in law had a similar experience to that too Gamblor!!!!

We were actually at the snow (Thredbo) and as we (I) were startin to pack the car, it was absolutly pissin down!!!!! Over 100mm that day!!!!! We’ll as I said, I was packin the car cause the brother in law didn’t wanna get all wet!!!!!

Just as we were about to leave, he had realized that his young bloke had hired a DVD, and forgotten to take it back!!!!! So I drove him to the bottom of the stairs that led to the main concourse where the Video hire was!!!!!

Bein Thredbo, ya can’t park on the side of the road anywhere!!!!! So I told him to wait under the bridge outta the pourin rain, and I’ll pick him up after I do a lap of the Village!!!!!

When I pulled up, it was only moments after a truck had gone passed first!!!!! Next to where he was standin under the bridge, the gutter is about two foot deep for some reason, and can hold quite a lot of water!!!!!

I have never seen someone so wet in my life!!!!!  LOL I told him it was Karma for not helpin to load the car!!!!!
