Do a little bit of research before running out and getting one of these.  Yes it will work just as good as long as you understand how light / flash works.  The cheap versions almost never come with TTL or what ever the Nikon version is.  This means you have to know how light metering works.

You cant just throw it on your camera and expect it to work.

true bout lighting! not easy to get it right without TTL! But i guess if you have time and patience, you can trial and error! At least you you won’t have to fork out for film processing anymore! :D

Just going to go through the important stuff.

Canon 5D Mk II DSLR

Sony HVRV1U Video camera

Hey mate,
Have you used the 7d yet, Im upgrading at the end of the month and am tossing between the 7d and the 5d Mark II.  I am wanting to go full frame but with all the rumors about a new 5D Mark III flying around thinking I may hold off on full frame till next year.  Im not doing much (anything) in the way of video yet but will start to play once I upgrade.  So not to worried about that.

If anyone else has done a side by side comparison feel free to give your input.

The two set ups I am jumping back and forth on are:
5d Mark II
Canon 15mm F2.8 Fisheye

or

7d
with same fisheye or a
Canon 24-105mm F4 Wide angle or
possible something else depending on the deal I can swing.

Dan Carr does a good comparison on his site

Well I finally did it I put the order in yesterday and should see a package arrive in the next couple days.

Ordered the 7d with the Canon 70-200 F4L IS USM.

I opted to not get a fisheye or UWA just yet.  Will rent a few over the next little while and see if any grow on me.  Looking forward to putting up some shots of the new set up soon!

Got my new gear, it took 4 days after ordering it to arrive.  I did put the order in on a Sunday so I expected it.  The company I ordered it from is based in Hong Kong and has a office in Sydney.  The down side to the company is when the camera and lens arrived both manuals are in Chinese and the camera was set up in chinese to so it took a few lucky guesses to get it to goto English.  The charger that came with it is for a North American outlet but they did send a converter with it.

Everything else is perfect.  The lens is solid and being my first L series WOW what a difference.  The 7D is 10 times that of my Rebel, I cant wait to get used to the layout but I am already getting the hang of things.  I will post some photos soon.

I have a Sigma 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM lined up as a rental for Bowlarma this year so this could be something I look at adding to my set up… but really want to see how the new Canon fisheye is once its released.

How good is the 70-200mm f/4! I have the non IS version but it still gives impressive results and nice and small and light compared to the 2.8!

This is my kit atm:

Canon:
550D

EOS 30

17-40mm f/4L

50mm f/1.4 USM

70-200mm f/4L

580EX II Speedlite

Looking at getting something more compact like a G12 for music festivals.  Can anyone recommend anything?

From what I have heard you could pick up a G9 and have almost all the goodness of a G12 but for heaps cheaper.  The real only big difference is the mega pix… But again this is just what I have heard.  I have not done a comparison or research into compacts in a while.

Let us know what you find.

I had a quick look around on the net but decided against getting one as it doesn’t fit into the budget! The main benefit of the G12 appears to be its higher FPS capability though, other than that they seem pretty similar.

hey darb did you order off digital revolution?

got my 500d off them and a mate got his 7d from there aswell.

Well as above i currently have a 500d eith stock 18-55 lens on it at the moment. Its done me well so far bt once my tahoe trip is paid for im getting some better glass.

Also have a panasonic tz10(also from digital rev) which was an impulse buy to take to nz last year.
I run adobe master suite (cs5) but still have barely scratched the surface of the damn program! so much to do on there,

I got my new set up from a online company called Digital World International, DWIdigitalcameras.com.au was heaps cheaper then anyone else I could find.  You get Aus warranty.  Came super fast and everything is legit.

Wish they would ship to Canada now that Im back in the home country.

oh ok cool.

My mate actually just got rid of his 7d, apparently there was a fairly common problem with the auto focus in some of them. side by side comparison my 500d with stock 18-55mm lens and his 7d with $1000+ lens, and my photos were hell clearer/sharper. it was weird, 80% of the time it would be fine then it would just go to shit for an hour or 2.  of course you could switch it to manual focus and its all good. but there are times when this is annoying. Hopefully it has been rectified by now,
