This thread being stickied makes it so much harder to notice…

Hopefully we can get a good deal through them, I doubt they will be packed in September :S

If interested is there for Ullr (pronounced Ullr !!!!!!- what’s with the “er” if anything “Ulla” is closer) I will call Sandy and see what deal can be wrangled. And there will be a deal.

I’ve stayed there often and they are the most generous and friendly people. It is also the preferred drinking hole for ski patrol and the bar food last year was some of the best grub on the mountain - it rivalled Tapas next door at Berntis, on a good night it could equal The Terrace at a 5th of the cost.

All the staff that have ever worked there have remained loyal or felt comfortable in returning in a social atmosphere. There are rough edges to the place (it’s not 5 star like The Condo) but it does maintain the warmest and welcoming atmosphere. I was even stuck having a cold shower there once along with some other guests, no of them were upset, they had all just gone to reception to let the staff know. The love in that building makes it (in my books) the heart of Thredbo. It’s location is geographically in the exact middle.

I’ve spent many, many, many hours in the bar socialising. Breakfast is as good as anywhere (but not produced with the same uncaring as the Hotel) but the breakfast staff may grumble a bit - they were probably the ones that were drinking with you until the bar closed.

There is no pretence at Ullr.

As well as Ullrokee they often have a live act, usually “jock” (ski patrol and the nicest person in Thredbo) or anyone else who can strum a guitar and work the crowd. Another “but” by Sept 16 most entertainment has finished winter - I guarantee Ullrokee wont be on in spring.

(2nd of the photo’s was taken peak season 2000 - the first photo is an accurate representation.)

I’ll give Sandy a call Mizu, if you like. But those prices you quoted are pretty similar to the Condo!!

Is this a transport issue amakat?

Remember; The boardworld Shred is not being organised by a group of teenagers or uni students.
There will be “well matured” adults and professionals from within the industry, my 7 year old girl will likely be there.

Boardworld is about bringing professionals of the surf/snow/skate community together to help people who share this interest whether they have never stood sideways before or have all their lives.

I could be wrong but Nordic pronunciation is to rrrrrrroll the rrrrrrr’s - Ullrrrrrr!!!!! Sounds like Uller????

I have already contacted Sandy and that’s roughly what she’s worked out atm!!!! Until we get some solid commitment it is really hard to get final $$$!!!!

You can still give her a call and mention it as well, just to see how much love you can put into the deal!!!! Let her know that I’ve been in contact as well!!!! (emails from Andrew - mizu@..... )

I’ve stayed at Ullr a few times and I like it!!!!  cool grin A LOT!!!!

When I worked down there, Sandy told us it’s pronounced like this…. With a rolling RRRRR sound.

I would like to deposit for you guys, just need to know when I’m going and who with… Remember I need a lift, but I can go for a week or 2 days, just depending on how I get down there.

My motorbike is not an option lol.

I don’t know how a rolling rrrrrrrrr sounds like ‘er’ ;

ool’rrrrrrr

NOT

ool’errrrr

Pretend your a pirate when saying Ullr!

I’ve trained in pronunciation and voice training and had to exercise and control my voice box, Tounge, cheeks, teeth and lips. One particular exercise is to repeat vowels-especially ‘e’, ‘E’ and ‘r’, ‘R’ in an exaggerated manner.

The only explanation for describing it sounding like ‘er’ is that the Australian dialect drops many sounds. ‘d’ ‘t’ and ‘e’ are the major sounds not pronounced that give us our accent. So giving the description to an Australian to pronounce ‘er’ in the word Ullr will almost result in the correct noise as we find it difficult to say that word with our vocal practice of dropping the ‘e’ between an ‘l’ and ‘r’.

I’ve heard Sandy and Steve on many occasions attempt to get the clientele to say it right, after 2 or 3 goes they give up as the do it on a day in-out basis.

Ask a person with a nordic background to say it. We (as aussies) can hear the sound but not make it.

I’ll call Sandy or Steve today (not to find out the pronunciation but to ask about costs) wink
