what do i need to know abut French Alps?

Learn a bit of French, the food and wine are fabulous, and the resorts are ugly ugly ugly. Probably some of the worst structures ever built that mars an otherwise fantastic landscape. The lift systems are efficient and fast, getting around the mountain is easy.
I’ve been to the Chamonix area and Sainte-Foy/Tarentaise. Can’t tell you too much about Courchevel. I recommend Steve McDonald’s chalet operation in Sainte-Foy, http://www.whiteroomchalet.com.
The most convenient airports for the French Alps are Geneva, Switzerland, and Lyon, France. Both have shuttles and buses to the resorts, which are probably better options than the trains (slow, lots of transfers). If you decide to check out Chamonix, you can usually find people in the arrivals area of Geneva airport looking to share a taxi ride to Chamonix.
Sainte-Foy is nice, although heavy on the British folks (many who speak good French). I stayed at Steve’s chalet (top photo), and that was excellent. Good snow, too.
The mega-resorts like Tignes are awful. Great snow, great terrain and scenery, but the base areas are full of Brutalist structures that just don’t fit in the landscape.
Oh, and an added bonus is the La Thuile resort nearby, where you can ski/ride into Italy and vice versa.
