who’d you end up going with? from what i’ve seen it’s looking like around $900 for 8 months

I usually go with World Nomads. I haven’t booked yet, but I assume I will book with them again; good policy, good price. Actually, thanks for reminding me, I’ll add that to my ‘to do’ list.
