I will be here, and I know several others will be too. Whistler is a really awesome place and I know you would have a great time here. We are here to help, and it’s never too early to start planning.
The first thing I would do is concentrate on getting your work visa. That’s the first step. Once it’s granted, you will then have 12 months to enter Canada, and one you arrive you will be able to stay and work for up to 2 years on the visa.
Yeah I’ve got my visa started just have to pay the $150 then get the second part done.
There is no way I want to go through a company to get a job. I’m assuming the tip is get to the job fair? Does whistler take online applications? Or the only way to get a job is just hope to get lucky at the job fair?

I might go speak to some people in employment services to get the official rundown on their process. I think this would be really helpful for a lot of people so I’m happy to do it.

That would be a massive help for sure, I’m just heaps worried about getting over and not getting a job like I’m sure most people are for the first time. I’d be looking at getting lifty. So I’m guessing I’d have to get in pretty fast.

Why be a lifty? I work in a bar and love it, the work is hell fun. The tips are good (I dont touch my bank account for day to day expenses. its all tips) and i work mostly nights so i get to ride most days and am yet to miss a pow day from work (Buuut we only have had a few so that point is kinda moot this season) and working in a bar has perks. I get half price food at ll Gibbons venues (5 or 6 around town), half price drinks, have made connections with a lot of people around town who work in different jobs so we work on a “you scratch my back i scratch yours” type of arrangement so i rarely have to pay for food/drinks/board waxing among other stuff.
Id seriously look into it. I applied for the mountain and thankfully didnt make the cut. Im earning heaps more $$$ and love my job more than i would have had i went with the mountain.
Something to think about anyway.

Jez I’m thinking last few weeks of October because from what I’ve heard the job fair is start of November.

When you get here i can talk to some buddies and get you some face to face time with the managers of local bars before the job fairs to give you a head start if you wish.
I got here Oct 4th and started working as a carpenter that day but the whistler and other job fairs arent until the middle of dead season so mid Nov. We booked 2 weeks in the hostel. then had a place to live a week into that 2 weeks so i think you should be fine with 2 weeks. Considering you wont be working in that time due to it being dead season you can focus on finding a place to live.

Cool so id be looking at getting to Whistler maybe first or second week of November or you think October just to be nice and early for the fair?, spend a few days in Van getting my bank and phone sorted and visit Rogers Arena of course, home of my mighty Canucks haha

If you work for a bar on the mountain do you still get staff accom and a lift pass because they are two must have for my first season.
Anyone heard of a hostel called Hi Whistler? Seems pretty good, charging $440 for two weeks in a 4 person dorm in November.
It’s in cheakamus which is about a 20 minute bus ride from the village. I know plenty of people that stayed there and had no complaints.

Cool I think I’ll book that as soon as I know the dates of the job fair as I’m sure places would book out pretty fast.
