Splitboard/B.C. thread.

Avatar

So….  this being the new trend of the last couple of years, I thought I’d start a split thread, being that I am looking at eventually doing BC.

Anybody here have splits?
Talk to me talk to me!

Was looking at getting a split, and maybe some R&D magneto bindings (easy on and easy off is awesome for me.)

Also in regards to the splitboard itself, what EQ are required? I got a little lost looking it up myself:

1) Board
2) bindings
3?(???)  Plate kit for bindings? Or are those usually included in thebindings.
4) Skins.

That’s about it right?

DISCLAIMER: Of course if you’re going BC, you need a BC kit like shovel, probe and beacon minimally, also don’t be a fool, go wtih a mate or let ppl know if you’re going BC.

A bunch of us will be taking the AST 1 course in Whistler on December 13 and 14.

I haven’t splitboarded before but I’m really looking forward to doing it in the course. I have hiked/shredded in the backcountry before, but using snowshoes and snowboard strapped to a pack.

Other than that, I don’t know too much about the topic. So I’ll be keeping a close eye on this thread to learn more.

Hahah I’m the same with you, and yes I’ve signed up for the BW AST course too so I’ll probably see you then if not on the mountain before then.

I’ve got 2 (maybe 3 days) to get my board legs back before the AST course.

The AST1 course is a great way to also find out if you enjoy the idea of splitboarding/ski touring. To be honest, it doesn’t always turn out to be everyone’s “thing”.

One of the biggest drawbacks for a splitboarder, is that initially there is a huge outlay in costs (board, bindings, skins, poles, beacon, probe, shovel). Now, all of this brand new, you are LUCKY to have change from around $2000. If you go for something brand new, you’re looking at anywhere fro $700 to $1200 for a board and then bindings can be anywhere up to even $1000 on their own. Skins, you can usually get for around $150.

That said, if it turns into something you love, there are a lot of people in this part of the world who only tour and don’t even buy a lift pass. So, if the idea of big mountain/backcountry/mountaineering truly appeals to you, then you’re going to love it!

Consider buying second hand if you can find something in good condition and quality, but if you can afford it, I’d like to get something from Prior. I went and did a tour through there the other day and it was awesome! If I had the money right now, I’d be getting one of those for sure.

See how you go in the course next weekend and go from there!

Just wanted to add - this is something I’m VERY interested in getting further into as the season progresses. I’m really lucky to work where I do. I get all the backcountry Beta from the guides and I get access to all of our courses for no cost.

Dan and I will be continuing on to do AST2 this winter and also a Crevasse Rescue & Glacier Travel course. Between those three, I think I’ll get a very good broad coverage of the main areas for touring in BC and beyond.

I’ll be sending out an email to all of the BW participants shortly regarding the course, etc.

^ Lu, on your first post, yes, that’s the thing, I’m not permanently in whistler yet, just there for a month and I although it’ll be great to leave a split set with the girl, I think I might not get enough use out of it….. I guess we’ll have to see…... I am tempted tho’... real tempted. =(

1) Board

4) Skins.

1)board
2)bindings
3)voile kit (not needed if you get karakoram bindings). There are different voile kits for different binding types. If you are using regular bindings you will need the full voile kit. If you get voile bindings or spark r&d then you don’t need the slider plates and the kit is cheaper.
4)skins
5)poles if you don’t have them. a whippet can be useful too
6)big biceps for pulling your skins apart at first and lots of patience. Skins drove me crazy at first!
