Hey guys, I have been looking into repping some companies gear this season but I have had some trouble finding a good first sponsor does anyone know any?
Welcome to Boardworld, MNb.
Before you even start trying to get a sponsor, you need to ask yourself what value you would bring to any potential sponsors. First and foremost, it’s a business relationship and it needs to be mutually beneficial. Think about this long and hard before you approach anyone.
That said, generally a good starting point is your local shred shop. Spend time in there, get to know the staff, show a genuine interest in the local scene. Then refer back to my first paragraph. How can you help THEM?
Good luck.
^ +1 what Jez said.
Just being good at boarding doesn’t cut it. There are many ppl who are super good at boarding.
What, you say? You haven’t heard of them?
Exactly.
Good luck!
Start hammering social media, FB, IG, Twatter, all that shit, show that you can produce good content that people will take notice of. It’s definitely not enough to just be good anymore. being able to subtly (and not so subtly) promote a product or brand to a large audience would definitely be something you can “bring to a brand, company or shop” and is a great way of getting free shit
i reckon these days its more about brands finding you rather than you approaching brands.
1. learn to ride good
2. film your mega hammers
3. make a mega rad edit and host it online
4. ????????
5. Profit (sponno)
Yeah, like rider said!!!!!
Start at the ground level, be an ambassador to the guys that look after you, stay loyal to people that look after you, and put in a shit load of effort!!!!!

E-book shops fix that little problem!

Kinda tend to agree.
Little mate of ours got his first sponsor, a local surf shop after winning a few comps above his age division.
Few years, few comps later and he’s got some serious sponsors.
But he keeps winning/placing in big competitions.
And he’s gone the home school route to get more wave time…so he’s sacrificing a lot.
They approached him. He did not approach them.
Nothing wrong with having a look at how you can get started there, but you would indeed have to show them why it is worth more than the cost of sponsoring you to their bottom line…what are you offering. It’s like being a good employee….what are you going to bring to the company above and beyond the cost offset of having you there?
