Lumbos, the future of bindings?

Avatar

Okay, so first off I want to say I applaud anyone who tries to innovate new hardware for snowboards.
It’s a big task to create something for a system that already works well and these things almost always end up with more negatives than positives. But I still think they should be made, to keep seeing what is possible.

With that said… what the hell was he thinking?
It’s not the product itself that bugs me. I see what he was trying to do, and that’s valid whether it worked or not.
It’s the fact that he says, I tried snowboarding and hated it, so I went home and created this disc…. huh?
A guy fails to learn how to snowboard (lets be honest, if he ever learnt how to snowboard properly he wouldn’t hate it, just doesn’t happen) and then goes home and thinks he can revolutionise the sport that he obviously doesn’t understand yet.

Anyway, that’s just my personal opinion. You guys may feel very differently about it. So tell me your thoughts on this.

Also on his website he keeps calling bindings “binders”.
It just does my head in LOL

Hey!!!!! I use the word “Binders” all the time!!!!!

But the Gumbo Binders looks shit!!!!! LOL

Meh, I can see the appeal (maybe more towards skaters?) but snowboarding is not skating or surfing and I don’t think I want my feet moving around when I’m riding especially when bombing a run. And he said they’re able to make their turns without skipping or sliding out of it but the in the video they’re all sliding (sorry, gotta nitpick that).

I like this bit on his website:

Q: Why hasnt anyone else thought of spin, spins, spinning, &/or getting spun on a snowboard or similar before?

A:
Most excellent question!  Chicken, disbelief, irrational fear, stubbornness, you name it.  Frankly, no one has ever stepped out on such a limb, so to speak, well, unbelievably very few have, though not for any significant duration of time, otherwise they would have discovered this totally novel and wholly unobvious, hitherto uncharted and untapped viable characteristic.  Above all, LUMBOS™ accessories are empowering, undeniable proof of concept.

YEP no one has ever stepped out on such a limb… except
The swivler
Quick Stance
Board Hubz
Twisted Bindings
The Ah Binding
And they’re just ones I found on google in 2 minutes

I mean, I feel like a bit of a hater. But if I was going to design a sail boat. I would definitely learn how to sail well first.
Then check the market to see what’s out there.
And THEN think about designing a new type of boat.
I think it’s just the way he’s gone about it that bugs me.

I was gonna say.. this is nothing new.. my first ever board had (and still has) a swivler.
i was handy on the lifts and in the lines but as I learned how to snowboard better I found that I didnt need it….. I did get alot of strange looks.

What part of snowboarding are they trying to improve? I don’t see ANY benefits at all here. I’m with Andy on this one. I don’t get it, I don’t like it, and I really don’t see the point. I’m not buying into the whole “you don’t have to be twisted on a chairlift/while skating” argument — not to mention it’s been done before with little success. long face

Looks like he’s running a demo day at Whistler.

We can try them for ourselves rider wink

I’m always happy to give something a try and be honest about it. I’ll demo if the opportunity arises.

But here’s the thing. Even if I had a fun time on it, which I’m sure I could — would I ever choose it over normal snowboarding with fixed angles? That’s a definite NO from me. So what’s the point, really?

Avatar

Yeah I would definitely try it. I think it would be fun as a challenge. Probably hilariously sketchy with a bunch of mates.
But I doubt it would make me want to buy it.

You could probably achieve the same results by filing all the teeth off your binding discs and attaching them really fucking loose. LOL

Does anyone else think this is serious knee injury just waiting to happen?

It looks obvious to me that you could really hurt yourself if you fall wrong.

With surfing and skateboarding, you can actually remove your foot from the board just by lifting it off. This thing keeps you attached to the board, while still twisting.

No thanks.

very good point.

One of the things I really prefer board over skis for is the ‘splinted’ in feeling when you go cartwheeling down the hill.

Good for the knees? The first thing I thought about when I saw it was there goes my acl!
