Books: What are you currently reading?

I am only a little into this book, it is great read, what this guy got up to before he became a soldier is thought provoking to say the least.
Anyway, this guy got into surfing and then snowboarding. I think he should be a member of Boardworld, he would fit in here perfectly shaka

Dragging up an old thread to try and get some recommendations for good books to buy! I will be spending a lot of time on planes and in airports over December/January and want to load up on some good reading to keep me occupied. I’ll pretty much read anything so I’m open to any suggestions people may have.

I’ve been reading a lot lately. I’ve read some really fun and fast-paced books by James Patterson. I’ve read books from the Alex Cross series, Private series, and some other one-off books: Zoo and NYPD Red. Anything by James Patterson is entertaining at least, so definitely look into it.

I just finished “Spy” by Ted Bell. Really well-written and entertaining. I’m probably going to read more Ted Bell books.

Ken Follett has been another author I really like. I’ve read some of his older books and I really want to start reading his “Century Trilogy”. I know it would be a great read. The books are: Fall of Giants, Winter of the World, and Edge of Eternity. http://ken-follett.com/en/

Vince Flynn is another great author if you enjoy the fast-paced, action, CIA, covert-ops type of book.

I have also read some business books lately but I won’t bore you with those details, haha.

I also just bought a Kobo, so I’ll be downloading a lot of books for when I’m travelling etc.

* I never used to be such a nerd. flushed haha wink

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ve read some older James Patterson books and liked them so that might be a good option.

I’ve read Fall of Giants by Ken Follett, I don’t think its as good as Pillars of the earth and its sequel but still good. Went to buy the second century series book and accidentally grabbed the third so back to the bookstore for me! The books are HUGE which is good cos it’ll take me a bit longer to read but it’s a pain to drag around!

Will definitely look into your other recommendations too smile

we’ve started taking the bus to work,  and I’ve been reading one called “Battlecry: Sten Omnibus 1” which is actually 3 books in one, it’s been keeping me pretty entertained.

cue intro:
Vulcan is a factory planet, centuries old, Company run, ugly as sin, and unfeeling as death. Vulcan breeds just two types of native - complacent or tough. Sten is tough.

When his family is killed in a mysterious accident, Sten rebels, harassing the Company from the metal world’s endless mazelike warrens. It’s a fool’s errand, of course - no man can stand against the might of the Company and expect to live. But Sten isn’t just any man.

From the corrupt and brutal factories of Vulcan to the plots and intrigues of the Imperial Court, the galaxy is about to come face-to-face with the ultimate warrior. Sten’s already learned how to survive - now he wants more; he wants control of his own destiny. And he’ll do whatever it takes to get it.

No compromise, no retreat, no surrender. Only Sten.

Air if you wanna stock up for traveling then definitely get yourself a kindle. It’ll never be as good as a real book, but they are pretty damn good and so convenient for traveling.
I absolutely love mine and have been able to download all sorts of amazing books!

An awesome one I read a few months ago was ‘Around the world on a bicycle’ by Thomas Stevens…it is a book published in the 1880s I think and this guy documents his travels as he was the first person to ride around the whole world on a bicycle (a penny-farthing at that!). It was absolutely fascinating because a lot of the places he went, no one had even heard of a bicycle and they thought he was some kind of wizard on a magic horse. It is also interesting to read the quaint beliefs and notions of that time.

I’ve also just downloaded Unbroken which is a world war 2 survival story that has just been turned into a film that Angelina Jolie is directing. I saw the trailer and then searched out the book to read first. Will let you know if its any good.

I’m in the middle of reading 2 books - The book of lost things by John Connolly on the kindle and Dangerous Women which is a collection of stories edited by George RR Martin (one of them he wrote himself and is set in Westeros) in real book form cos Crackers lent it to me! Both are good!

I’m old fashioned when it comes to books, I love them! (yes I am a gigantic book nerd) My bookshelves are overflowing and I have boxes of books in the cupboards because I can’t bring myself to throw them away. That said, a kindle is starting to sound mightly appealing. I’m a really quick reader so my bag gets heavy fast! When i went to NZ for 2 weeks last year I think I read 3 of the GoT books and lugging them around wasn’t much fun! Plus with my dodgy joints my wrists start to ache holding open books for hours. I might have to cross over to the dark side of digital books!

Bicycle book sounds like an interesting read though. I love history so that sounds right up my alley! As does the WWII book.

Loving all the suggestions. I’m going to have to get on book depository I think so they arrive before I leave!

Raising Steam by Terry Pratchett.

Latest in the dicsworld series & very good.
Will will make you crack up laughing when you least expect it.

This is the exact reason I got on the kindle train. I was half way through the GoT series when I moved to Sweden and had already bought the last few books in the series, but couldn’t face the idea of filling up half my luggage space with those massive books, so I got a kindle and downloaded the series….Haven’t looked back!
If you’re traveling with real books then you face the prospect of having to give them away or whatever at various points because of the luggage space restriction. With a kindle, you get to keep every single book you read and I love that!

It will never replace the appeal of real books, but as a practical solution for traveling, you can’t beat it!

Just checked on Amazon and I can’t believe how cheap Kindles are! For some reason I thought they’d be about double that price. Well I know what I’m getting for Christmas now raspberry I reckon in the long run, with the amount of money I spend on books it would actually work out heaps cheaper.

Thanks for the tip Cords :D

there’s kindle sitting on my shelf. haven’t touched it since I got the iPad. Can use all the apps on there, kindle, ibooks etc, as well as multiple magazine apps. Different apps have different controls, some let you scroll pages instead of turning pages, good for reading in bed, and have multiple brightness levels, night, day etc. Having the different apps means you can search for the book at a cheaper price. for example, just read the Rosie Effect, $17.99 on ibooks, $9 in Amazon (kindle). But the garlic book was much cheaper in ibooks…..
Anyway, I love the iPad for reading. I take it camping with no electricity , can read for a full couple of days in airplane mode. smile
