Yep, check the Whistler buy and sell pages and post here to let us give you the heads up if it’s decent or not.
Go to a shop and get a good pair of snowboard boots that fit your feet properly. If you’re doing a season, this is priority #1.
Otherwise, a nice Jacket, Pants and thermals will keep you sorted until you work out what you want. Remember that this is snowboarding, you’re better off getting something stupidly colourful than being a ninja on the mountain!
I get to whistler on 19 November.
If I was to get gear before getting to whistler, what should I be after? Jacket, trousers, what else? Thanks again for all the help people!
What do you have already?
I was in Whistler today looking around the shops. There is HEAPS of really good gear on sale for half price. I guess it was a really shitty season last season and stores are left with a lot of stock. Get in early and there’s a lot to choose from and really good pricing.
For boots, I strongly recommend you go to Comor in the village. These guys are brilliant boot fitters and really know their stuff. Last year’s boots are on sale at 60% off and this year’s boots are 20% off. I actually bought Michelle a pair of boots from there today after they spent more than an hour getting her into the right pair of boots.
I haven’t got anything snowboard related yet.
I’m guessing there won’t be much left in the sales when I get there? I’ll get the boots from comor when i arrive and I’ll try and find a snowboard shop in LA for jacket and trousers. If not I’ll just have to pay more for it in whistler.
I also need to look into my mountain pass from four seasons. I’ve read that they don’t let you get one until you’ve been working awhile and I don’t start until 1 December.
Would it make sense for a beginner to rent helmet, goggles, board etc?
I don’t think you’ll pay more in Whistler. There’s a lot of great gear available for half price. There will still be a bunch when you get here. Personally, I’d just wait till you get here.
Dude, save my number. Call me when you get here. I’ll help you get your gear sorted. Jeremy: 604 905 8327.
Van has heaps shops all on W4th within a block. Most of them also have stores in whis (like commor) Alysha got new boots from Commor in Van - the manager there is probably the best bootfiter i’ve ever met - this was the third store we’d been to and she’d tried maybe 10 pairs of boots so far. He looked at her foot, measure her up and gave her a pair straight off the bat that was far and away the best boot shed tried. the guy knows his stuff (these are ski boots - not snowboard boots) but yeah very impressed with him.
Van shops still have sales - and boardroom has an entire outlet store full of sale gear so theres heaps around.
Thanks again, everyone!
I’m not in Vancouver for long, just over a day. I have to get my SIN, Bank account, phone etc set up. If I get time though i’ll try and stop by Boardroom to have a look around.
Jeremy, i’ll shoot you a message when I get there and have my Canadian number set up.
In regards to phone providers out there, does anyone have any experience with Wind Mobile? I found this deal and compared to everything else i’ve found it looks too good to be true: http://www.windmobile.ca/plans-and-devices/plans/mobile-plan-details/phone-plan-wind-35
$35 for unlimited data, province wide calling, nationwide texting. Their coverage map looks pretty decent too.
I just spoke to my wife and her family (they are Vancouver/Whistler locals). They said Wind has really bad coverage around here and in Whistler. My sister in-law was with Wind and the coverage was horrible. She received some huge bills because the phone went on roaming just in Horseshoe Bay (which is close to West Vancouver and on the way to Whistler). I would err on the side of caution here.
I would look at Fido. I was with them in previous seasons and their pricing was very competitive at the time (not sure about now) and the coverage in Whistler was perfect. http://www.fido.ca/
I’m with Telus now. They would have the best coverage in Whistler.
yea you just have to look at their coverage map to realise you shouldnt go with them

Dunno about now, but I thought Bell had some pretty competitive prices!!!!!
While Rogers tried to Rodger me!!!!!
Yeah, I didn’t look at the description on the coverage map, I saw whistler was covered and assumed it was by them.
I’ll look at bell later. Fido seem to be quite expensive.
All I really want is about 100/200 minutes, decent amount of texts and data but data seems to be incredibly expensive over there.
I’m with 7/11 and I’ve found them quite good it’s 100mins for calling unlimited texts and 200mb of data. The coverage is pretty good all over the mountains.
The only draw back is it’s prepaid but once you get over that’s it’s a really sweet deal..
Thanks Wilmshurst! I just looked at that and it looks great. $35 for everything I need and prepaid won’t bother me at all.
Just had a look, and Bell has 150mins with 200mb, prepaid for $30.75!!!!!

Plus it has a bonus save $5 a month for the first 8 months!!!!! Unlimited texts Can/US!!!!!
Just be careful with pre-paid as most providers charge you for receiving calls! It can eat up your minutes pretty quickly.

Just use the ignore function!!!!!
Especially if it’s Jeremy that’s callin!!!!!
But yeah, I’d just make the most of the unlimited texts instead of callin!!!!!
