Reports that mounted camera contributed to Schumacker brain injury

Avatar

I don’t want to say the makers name least I get accused of bias.

But I think the attachment of a device to your helmet and the weakening of the structure is worth a discussion. Something I didn’t even think of - even though my camera is not attached to my helmet.

And will this change your set up?

is the issue weakening of the helmet structure?  I expected it would be more about having a “lever” on the helmet that is more likely to twist your head during a fall.

From The Telegraph:

Experts from ENSA, the world-renowned ski and climbing academy in the French ski resort of Chamonix, have conducted tests to determine whether the presence of a solid object between a helmet colliding with a rock would weaken the structure.

The helmet smashed — but the camera he had attached to it, in order to record him and his son skiing, was undamaged. The footage, audio and visual, has provided police with crucial information about the crash.

“The helmet completely broke. It was in at least two parts. ENSA analysed the piece of the helmet to check the material, and all was OK,” said a source close to the investigation.

“But why did it explode on impact? Here the camera comes into question. The laboratory has been testing to see if the camera weakened the structure.”

Ah ok.  I don’t reckon it actually weakened the structure but it’s possible the lever created by the cam put more force on the helmet than it was designed for.

So they don’t know if the camera was “the” major contributor to his brain injury, until a group of French mountaineers do further tests?????

I woulda thought people in that field such as world standards certifies etc, would be the best to do the study?????

Maybe French F1 commentator Jean-Louis Moncet, is an expert on these things????? LOL

And that article belongs on my toilet paper holder!!!!!

The NASDAQ has copped a pizzlin in the last few days, so GoPro’s Share Price fallin has got fuck all to do with Schumacher!!!!!

Journalistic hype tripe that’s as good as the “Saving Snowboarding” rubbish of late!!!!!

Some of these mounts are a lot bulkier in comparison to other brands but I don’t know if I believe this article or not.

I know when Dark had a massive stack, his camera went flying off his helmet, mount too. But I guess his mount is a LOT different to the kind in question.

I call bullshit on the suggestion it made any difference to the injury he sustained. There’s no explanation on the science behind the accusation. Until we see the studies, it’s all speculation in my opinion. I don’t think this is anything more than a high-profile, tragic accident.

If it were true and a camera mounted on a helmet made the helmet useless, then on the same hand if you ran into someone that was wearin/holdin a camera, and your helmet’s impact point ended up bein that camera, that would mean that the helmet was useless in that situation?????

This is exactly what helmets are designed for, aren’t they????? Protection from impacts on objects!!!!!

Mr.h0z has lost 2 mounts off his helmet.. One just came of at some.point while.riding - luckily no camera attached.. And the other one he had a pretty decent stack and did a few rolls… Camera and mount both detatched from his helmet…  (yes it was also a gopro)  if this did contribute in any way (although like jez I call total bs!) then what about running into a tree branch or hitting a pointed rock?  it would have to be a one in billion kind of thing?  - hit at the exact right angle on the exact right object with the right force and camera mounted in the right spot on the right helmet.. Etc…  to many variables have to line up… As every other stack I’ve seen/heard off the camera most likely comes off!

sports helmets like used for skiing are only good for impact up to 20kmh

lever on head you say….
cause injury you say….
-makes you look like a teletubby more importantly-
im surprised no one on here has mentioned these things in the past; oh wait…
