Did a quick trip out to the main range with my girlfriend last weekend, super fun, lots of hard work but very very worth it to get a last bit of winter stoke in before a long hot summer. Have a Utah/Tahoe trip booked and paid for in Feb/Mar next year so have something to look forward to yet!
I’d had a surf that morning, by surf I mean I ran out the front and caught one wave, that arvo I ran up the hill about 100m, strapped into my board whilst still wearing boardies and “snowboarded” down the hill so I can now claim to have surfed and snowboarded in the one day.
Headin out across the creek
The 14 yr old kmart tent affectionately known as “the f#gdome” set up in probably the last place it’s “designers” ever thought anyone would be silly enough to test it out. I was keen to setup on the snow but the girlfriend wanted the grass so we did the grass thing, wasn’t very flat at all so our nights sleep wasn’t amazing but also wasn’t terrible.
Nice mountain sunrise
We headed off straight to the top of Carruthers Peak for our first line, I remembered from my first trip two years ago that it’s actually pretty steep, still steep this time as well.
A quick video of the ride down. The girlfriend mentions that it’s really steep which is what I’m answering “yes” to in the beginning of the vid ha ha.
After that we hiked back up and wandered over to what I think is called Little Austria for a slightly more mellow line, something a little more enjoyable for the girlfriend rather thann a white knuckler.
Up the top of Little Austria with Watsons Crags in the back ground and the Sentinel immediately behind I think.
Looking down into Little Austria
Halfway down
We had lunch down the bottom near a creek which was nice.
The walk out of there was hard, really hard, super steep and over heather and long grass which wasn’t much fun at all. We headed a short distance over to Mt Lee and rode down that, probably our longest line actually. After that we headed back up towards camp and popped over the top with a short ride back into our camp about 2:30.
The sun was pretty grunty so I had a bit of sunbake after an incredibly invigorating swim in the creek ha ha ha.
The wind started to kick up a bit so we made a split second decision and packed our kit up and bolted out of there and headed down to Jindy for a pub meal and a proper bed in a Brumby cabin at the caravan park. Was a quick hit and run but so worth it, highly recommended to get out there over the next two weeks or so!
There is 40cm due tomorrow…
I wanna get out there!
thinking of jumping in the car on Friday night!
That looks great, would love to do something like that some day. What were the daytime temps like up there?
So you didn’t end up sleeping out there?
We slept out there Friday night and pulled the pin before the second night. Mud I think daytime temps were about 13 degrees or so with a light westerly that got stronger in the arvo. The wind was actually a good thing as it kept you cooler as you work up a massive sweat hiking.
With regards to the 40cms falling, I would say it might be a little sketchy as it will appear as though there is good cover when in reality you’re likely to go straight through to the rock/bush beneath. With that said I would quite happily hammer down Carruthers Peak with 40cms of ppow on it, probably be the best line I’ve ever done!
That looks epic!
But you forgot to add in the side trip to whistler you will
Be doing in your trip…
That’s awesome, Mike. Great effort and thanks for sharing.
makes me wish i liked hiking
Looks fun
Moar sunbake pics!!
Looks like a great time mate definitely something that’s on my to do list.
The f@gdome brings back some terrible memories but to it’s credit it held up a lot better than my tent!
makes me wish i liked hiking
